Lite On LTR-48125W

it won't recognize any kind of disc that i put into the drive. actually, every now and then, it'll recognize a random disc. for example, i've tried installing Age of Empires 3 and it will read the first 2 discs, but not the 3rd (yeah, 3 discs for installation). it won't read any audio CDs. it won't read software discs. it won't read game discs. it will, however, read some burnt discs and will create new burnt discs. that's it though.

it's been a problem for a long while now. the problems started occurring after my last major upgrades: amd64 3000+, asus motherboard, xp sp2. everything worked fine in the beginning, then it randomly stopped working. i also have a sony dvd-r that is problematic on occassion when i put in a cd or cd-r.

i've searched the internet for 3+ hours reading through forums and trying various suggestions.
i downloaded the latest firmware that i could find: v0D. however, i can't find any (old or new) drivers for it. the drivers currently installed are what windows xp sp2 installs automatically.

it seems that a ton of people are experiencing this same problem. one or two people have figured out solutions that doesn't work for the rest of the people. all of my jumpers are correct, and the cables are properly connected. and yes, i checked the cds on other devices (cd players, other computers, etc), and they work fine on those.

i don't know what else to do. suggestions?
