if i've got a system with PC2-4300 ram with 4-4-4-12 timings, should I buy additional ram with 3-3-3-8 timings or more ram with 4-4-4-12 timings (that is slightly cheaper?)

i was thinking the 3-3-3-8 ram will be slightly faster, but won't the older sticks end up bottlenecking the newer sticks?

Yes, but if you have a capable board you might could run the 44412 faster...how much price difference are we talking here?
