how accurate is it? basically claims that Judas was the number one follower and was given a special vision that was denied the other apostles. Claims that Judas did not acutally "betray" Jesus, but was following a divine plan. NY Times also said something about it revealing something about creation. 4/10/2006 1:44:31 AM |

extant biblical texts have been around for a while, and say lots of crazy things. They're nothing new. The only reason so many people are talking about this is because NGEO is making a big deal out of it.
It's interesting, but it's not that groundbreaking like a lot of people, and the media, are portraying it. 4/10/2006 1:52:06 AM |

One problem is that the recent translation is a copy of the original gospel. This creates several problems, one the copier could have made several mistakes in writing the gospel, two he was probably a monk (obviously not a roman catholic, but probably a marcionite) and had bias opions about the subject and could have changed the subject matter (a common practice back then) and three he could have left out portions of the document. However, these problems usually occur when something has been coppied and re-coppied several times. We are in luck though because the researchers believe that the Gospel of Judas was only coppied once or a couple of times. 4/10/2006 1:53:20 AM |

isn't it obvious that Judas needed to betray jesus? After all, Jesus did tell Judas to do what needed to be done. 4/10/2006 1:54:14 AM |

^^ Those "problems" exist with the regular bible, and most old texts too. 4/10/2006 1:55:31 AM |

"did they say anything about carbon dating it?"
they have carbon dated the document to around 300 A.D. but the original was probably written in the early part of the 1st century.
Also, its a huge finding becasue it puts a new definintion on the name judas and his place in the bible and christianity. 4/10/2006 1:55:38 AM |

wasn't it a buddhist monk or monks that lit themselves on fire to protest a war or something ( I seem to remember hearing something like that once.

Well, that is the religion where the clergy have been known to say "We know some of the answers, but not all, heck, not even most" Then again, the leader of one sect of buddhism has declared steven segal a reincarnation of a buddhist lama 4/10/2006 6:27:38 AM |

yes he did, and by 1 definition (not the typical definition used when talking about religious martyrs) that makes the man a martyr because he died for his anti-war beliefs, but it was coincidence that he was a buddhist. It is not part of buddhism to worship him, nor was he pursecuted for his religious beliefs. which is what I think LiusClues is talking about
back on topic, someone asked when gospels of judas would be aired again
it airs this thursday then like 5 more times this month

many people, myself included, believe Judas was from a sect that truly believed the Conquering Messiah would come in their lifetime, so when the Messiah did show up as a peacemaker who urged non-violent means, it was thought that the only way to force the Conquering part of the Messiah prophecy would be to have him arrested and tried

check out this video of a National Geographic historian trying to explain the finding of the new Gospel to John Kasich, a Fox News analyst/reporter/talking head http://onegoodmove.org/1gm/1gmarchive/2006/04/john_kasich_is.html
Kasich can't handle these new findings because i think it shakes his faith a little bit and more or less accuses National Geographic for spreading lies and heresy a'la The Da Vinci Code. 4/10/2006 10:15:33 AM |

The betrayal was part of the divine plan, that does not change the fact that it was indeed a betrayal. It's hard to sneak something past an omniscient being.
^So when a death penalty of an innocent person is carried out, who gets the blame? The guy that flipped the switch, the judge, the jury of peers, the defendant's lawyer, etc., etc.4/10/2006 11:59:59 AM |
