not to mention:

1) if the police say the ice was pure, i'm not inclined to believe it is really HPLC-quality H2O ... just probably means it "looks" like ice, unless that expert on falling balls of ice did a quick field test.

2) an object falling from the sky at tremendous velocity is going to carry a hell of a lot of kinetic energy, which upon impact, will largely be dissipated as heat... as such, no way that ice-ball was as big as the hole it made ... it would have melted significantly...

as oustanding and credible as yahoo news is, i'm going to have to put my money on Hoax. Moral of the story: police and firemen are not chemists nor physicists, helpful as they are.
