Time commitment. I think Tech Talk gets 3-5 of these threads a month.

holy shit, you're right.
I'm sorry for being a dick so far. It's obvious that you desperately need someone who has more than a scanner and a geocities account to help you out.....

yeah, imagine that! A business owner expecting to find some real expertise, a willingness to get paid decent money, the opportunity to build a resume bullet on a university tech talk page! Looks like you guys are more interested in making jokes about my lack of expertise, than in doing the former. That's ok, I'm sure some highschool kid has time to make money!

damn... e-pwnt.

but my point still stands - i just didn't go about it in a very tactful way because as Perlith pointed out, there are at least 1 or 2 requests exactly like this a week.
There are 1000 ways to make a website, ranging from free do-it-yourself templates, which can still look pretty good, to modifying a blogging engine for your needs, to a $150 job with some basic information pages, a $500 job with some forms, download sections or forums, to $10,000+ for enterprise applictaions.

Just some bullets of what you're looking for will greatly help narrow down a price range and a time commitment, plus the level of expertise needed from the designer/builder. Is this purely informational? Do you want photo galleries or your remodels, or perhaps some cool flash walkthroughs of some of your jobs? Do you want a customer praise section, or a place for people to submit job proposals and receive estimates?
Most of this can be dealt with one-on-one with the designer, but some ballpark requirements is usually a good place to start.

It would be totally easy to take advantage of this guy.

Somebody needs to do that.

hey, we're businessmen too. you don't say "want a job?" and expect people to go out of their way to figure out what you want/need. we don't have time for that. provide some real details and maybe you'll get a decent response.

edit: if you don't know what you want, provide an example of a site that you think is comparable in complexity/functionality to what you want.

Thank you for your edification agentlion. What I have in mind would be informational, "before" and "after" pictures, display sections that show our methodolgy and materials and a means to allow a customer to respond with their interest.

As far as money for the project, just as I charge what I consider to be a "fair" price for our services, I don't expect to pay cut rate prices for amateur work, I'll pay a fair price for high quality services.

I guess it would be easy to take advantage, Spooky, but just as in my business, that always comes back to haunt you.

*grumble* Where's Noen when I need him?

You most likely won't find "high quality" services on this message board. I know some of the folks in here can do high quality work on the initial website, but I doubt they'll be willing to sign on for the maintenance/updates portions of the contract/services. I could be wrong, but just a good guess.

Best to look for a professional/consulting company that helps businesses of various sizes.

noamo: A sincere thank you for posting a basic outline of what you are looking for, it helps tremendously. If I wasn't starting on a contract job in less than a week, I'd be glad to help you out.

I usually have a list handy of trustworthy web people, I'll post up some screennames for people you can contact.
