this one isn't as much as an attack as the "wolfed down" one though

"Why coaches choose to turn down N.C. State

The people at North Carolina State are starting to realize just how attractive -- or not -- their coaching vacancy is perceived to be around the country.

Already two coaches with ample reason to take the job -- Texas' Rick Barnes, a North Carolina native and ACC aficionado; and Memphis' John Calipari, whose weak conference affiliation does more harm than good -- have elected to stay at their schools for less money than they would have received from the Wolfpack.

Both Barnes and Calipari turned down roughly $400,000 in additional annual compensation to stay at Texas and Memphis.

At the highest levels of college basketball, what's wrong with the N.C. State job?

Let us count the ways:

Expectations: N.C. State made it clear to Barnes and Calipari that finishing third in the ACC, if that means finishing behind Duke and North Carolina, is not acceptable. That's well and good to shoot that high, but realistic? It's not realistic. True, N.C. State has won two national championships. But look at the coaches who won those titles, Norm Sloan and Jim Valvano, and more important, look at their reputations from an NCAA investigative standpoint. Is N.C. State a place where you can win a national championship without cutting large corners here and there? It hasn't been done -- cleanly -- yet.

Admissions: Former Wolfpack coach Herb Sendek preferred cerebral athletes, setting a tone that spoiled the school's admissions board. Along the way, Sendek and the Wolfpack were unable to recruit two Raleigh stars -- Chris Wilcox and P.J. Tucker -- who qualified to play as college freshmen yet couldn't get past the N.C. State admissions office. Wilcox started for Maryland's 2002 national championship team, while Tucker was a second-team All-American this season at Texas. Tucker helped the Longhorns end N.C. State's season in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, putting up 17 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Attrition: This is the scariest reason of all. Coaches like Barnes and Calipari, who have turned losers into winners everywhere they've been, aren't afraid of North Carolina's Roy Williams or Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. They're more afraid of potential hangups with the school's admissions department. But worst of all is the potential for massive attrition from N.C. State's 22-10 team in 2005-06. The known is bad: starters Tony Bethel, Cameron Bennerman and Ilian Evtimov were seniors. The unknown is worse as it relates to the program's sophomore nucleus: Star center Cedric Simmons is considering entering the 2006 NBA Draft; power forward/pitcher Andrew Brackman is considering focusing only on baseball to get ready for the 2007 draft; and Jamaican wing Gavin Grant faces deportation issues.

Barnes and Calipari had reasons to stay where they are, of course. Barnes has Texas as a perennial Top 10 team, with another fabulous recruiting class on the way. Calipari also has Memphis in annual Top 10 territory.

Of the two, Calipari came closer to joining the Wolfpack. A source close to N.C. State athletics director Lee Fowler -- a former Memphis assistant under Dana Kirk -- said Fowler and Calipari bonded this week. Fowler noted that Calipari's latest graduation rates compared favorably to Sendek's, and Fowler also took an in-depth look into Calipari's background, dating to the Marcus Camby scandal in 1996 when Camby took money from an agent while playing for UMass.

After speaking with the NCAA, the source said, Fowler was eager to hire Calipari. And the feeling was almost mutual.

"I know for a fact Cal wanted the job, and he wanted to work for Lee Fowler," the source said. "But there were two or three things (Calipari) felt he couldn't overcome (at N.C. State), and he's not speaking about those things."

Those things, whatever they are, helped Calipari and Barnes turn N.C. State's attention into massive raises at their current schools. Those things, whatever they are, won't scare away everyone, of course.

LSU's John Brady is said to be next on the Wolfpack wish list, and if N.C. State is OK with the fact Brady has made a career out of coaching at the only viable in-state option for Louisiana's best players, Brady will be OK with N.C. State's money.

Is Brady an upgrade over Sendek? Ask ACC coaches. First, though, make them stop laughing. "

"With Calipari, Barnes out of the mix, N.C. State still searching for coach

By KEITH PARSONS, AP Sports Writer
April 12, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina State has plenty of money to spend on its next basketball coach. Finding someone to take it apparently is a problem.

John Calipari became the latest to turn down an opportunity to replace Herb Sendek, deciding instead to stay at Memphis. Calipari agreed to a contract extension Wednesday that comes with a nice pay raise, at least giving the impression he might have used his flirtation with the Wolfpack to his advantage.

"Is it possible?" said Rick Spell, a prominent Memphis booster and a friend of Calipari's. "Yeah, but let me tell you something. North Carolina State presented themselves well."

According to various reports, Wolfpack athletic director Lee Fowler offered Calipari about $2 million a year, a similar deal to the one Texas coach Rick Barnes declined over the weekend.

Barnes also got more money from the Longhorns, although a new contract hasn't been announced yet.

"It's a different business these days," Spell said.

Fowler, through a school spokesman, declined an interview request.

Sendek was 191-132 in 10 seasons with the Wolfpack, and he led them to appearances in the NCAA tournament during each of his final five seasons. That tied the late Jim Valvano for the best run in school history.

Sendek was introduced as the new coach at Arizona State on April 3.

Once Barnes was off the list, Fowler reportedly turned his focus to Calipari, who led the Tigers to a 33-4 record last season, his sixth at the school. They lost to UCLA 50-45 to fall one victory shy of their first trip to the Final Four since 1985.

"Cal has done a magnificent job, and he was the perfect hire for us," Spell said. "I believe he was the perfect hire for N.C. State, too. Cal would have rejuvenated that program. It was a very appealing option. In fact, he was somewhat blown away by it."

Where do Fowler and N.C. State turn now? With some key recruiting weekends coming up -- including national AAU tournaments around the country -- they need to find someone quickly.

"If it continues to drag on, it will affect their spring recruiting," said Dave Telep, the national basketball recruiting director for Scout.com. "You don't want to go deep in April without hiring a coach. These weekends are essential to recruiting."

Despite losing out on its first two choices, N.C. State does have an appealing job. The RBC Center, its home arena, is less than 10 years old and seats about 19,000 people.

Also, the Wolfpack has won two NCAA titles under two different coaches, a total surpassed by only five schools. Unfortunately for N.C. State fans and alumni, two of those are North Carolina (four) and Duke (three).

"In spite of things we are all hearing right now, professionals in this business believe the N.C. State job is a good one and that they will get a good coach," East Carolina athletic director Terry Holland said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

He coached at Virginia for 17 years and retired as the winningest coach in school history with a 326-173 record.

"The fact that they have been turned down actually shows that they are setting their sights high and it is hard to understand how that can be considered by some as such a negative," Holland wrote."

what was unclean? playing a pickup game with one recruit and some other allegations that were investigated with the only result being that the investigator called Valvano a great coach and good for college basketball.

once again, this guy makes a fool of himself, i wonder what he writes about other schools that are just blatant lies...

he probably thinks UNC has 5 national championships too...

Thompson got us on probation for playing a pickup game...no money or incentives other than that.

Valvano didnt get us on probation untill YEARS after he won the NC.

These people can go fuck themselves. They're the only ones responsible for making NC State look bad. If they'd quit writing shit about us, people might stop believing the lies.

we're not the cleanest program ever, but we're NOT CLOSE to the dirtiest.

Fuck the media. I'm done with this shit...I dont even care any more. Its obviously not going to stop, so fuck it.

Yeah here's his bio

Quote :
"Like so many gifted and humble writers, Gregg Doyel was raised in Oxford, Miss. As a boy he lived down the street from Willie Morris, read several William Faulkner sentences and heard his father, a professor at the Ole Miss law school, mention a student named John Grisham.

Doyel has been CBS SportsLine.com's college basketball columnist since October 2003. He had spent most of the previous decade covering the ACC for the Charlotte Observer and the Florida Marlins for the Miami Herald. A Marlins highlight was wearing Al Leiter's glove and being hit balls off the Green Monster by Jim Leyland. A lowlight? Being threatened by big mouth Bobby Bonilla.

Doyel, who attended the University of Florida with Dwayne Schintzius, loathes name-dropping losers. Did we mention one of Doyel's earliest childhood memories, before he moved to Oxford at age 7, was finding an armadillo on Barry Switzer's back porch in Norman, Okla.?

Doyel just got an iPod, where The Roots, the Bee Gees and The Fixx do his bidding. His favorite writers are Tupac, Dr. Seuss and Chuck Palahniuk. Doyel has written two books himself, both on college basketball, and is painfully aware that you've never heard of either one.

Next time you're in Fairfield, Ohio, drive carefully -- lest you hit a handsome young man said to jog astonishingly fast beside a border collie-beagle mix named Biscuit."

But he isn't telling it like it is. Calipari is going to end up making more with the Memphis raise + the payoff for staying through 09-10 than we offered. So this state is just plain wrong.

Quote :
"and Jamaican wing Gavin Grant faces deportation issues."

This is just an insult. The deportation issue is dead. I can't believe someone is allowed to put comments like this in print.

Then, after saying they had ample reasons to leave, he comes back with
Quote :
"Barnes and Calipari had reasons to stay where they are, of course. Barnes has Texas as a perennial Top 10 team, with another fabulous recruiting class on the way. Calipari also has Memphis in annual Top 10 territory."

I'd probably spit on this guy if I saw him at a bar. I mean, this is the reaction he would want. There is no "being the better man" in a case with this guy. He should be taken out behind the woodshed and taught a lesson.
