Cry Of Love
Mother Love Bone/Temple Of the Dog (these two are a different situation, though)

yeah, Helmet was pretty well known

and I figured most people had at least HEARD of Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog

and Cry Of Love was from Raleigh (i think their guitar player ended up being a member of the Black Crowes for at least a few years)

this says so much about your taste, because that album was 1000x better than anything beyond it. seriously, take a listen.

These bands didn't necessarily fall off completely, but their first albums are their best IMO:

Gang of Four
AIR
Liz Phair
B-52s
Elastica
MC5 (I think "Back in the USA" should count because "MC5" is a live album, but meh...it's all downhill after that)
Sex Pistols (BWAHAHAHA)
Starlight Mints

I'll second that. Especially considering her most recent two albums. Holy hell, those were awful.

And after their first album this band made me ashamed for ever liking them to begin with:

And who could forget these guys:

Although I'll have to say his two records following this one were pretty damn good in my eyes.

And I'll still buy his CD's when he's 90 years old and rapping about knocking a dude's dentures out.

I saw suicide machines with fugazi back in the day. now THAT was a fun show.

and I second helmet. that was a great album. Betty was less than stellar. and I also second third eye blind. I usually hate that kind of radio rock, but that was a pretty killer album.

I'll add the stone roses to the list even though their second album is pretty decent. NOTHING compares to that first album though.

ya brownies and lemonade was pretty good, same kind of thrash metal that was popular at the time with helmet/primus/orange 9mm so forth, then they sold out bad and played gay shit. i still have this album

and i agree with elastica, that first album was kickass

also

the breeders
spin doctors

I considered putting the Breeders, since "Pod" is by far the best, but I don't think the others are bad albums. Meh.

most bands "fall off" after a great debut album just because its hard to top that

but some dont fall off nearly as bad as others
