"Wolfpack does wonders for rich coaches
SCOTT FOWLER
N.C. State's "Aim for the Stars" basketball coaching search has succeeded in only one respect so far: It has made two already rich coaches even richer.

Rick Barnes from Texas and John Calipari from Memphis received overtures from the Wolfpack, considered them, flirted with the school mightily in the case of Calipari, and ultimately stayed put with major salary increases.

Who will N.C. State make rich next? Maybe it will be Louisiana State's John Brady, who has said he will listen if schools contact him.

At some point, the Wolfpack will make a coach rich and actually employ him, too. Herb Sendek's replacement will make a whole lot more in Raleigh than Sendek ever did. It has been reported that Sendek's total package was worth around $800,000, and that N.C. State might pay its new coach as much as $2 million.

That's ridiculous money -- and it's ridiculous anyone has to pay that much for a good college basketball coach. Why do I get the feeling that almost every head college basketball coach in America has a scoreboard in his head emblazoned with dollar signs?

There's no "I" in team, but there are two in "raise my compensation!"

You know the refrain. "If he makes this, why can't I make that? I'm just asking for what Coach X gets. C'mon! And a new practice facility. And a better car. And an extension beyond the current four years I have left, because I have to guarantee to recruits that I'll be there for their entire college career (even though I might leave you for a better job in a year or two)."

Coaches like money. We all do. But how about a contractual reduction in pay if the coach's players don't graduate and he doesn't win, either? I don't see a lot of coaches giving money back when they fail (give credit to Bob Knight on this score; he actually returned his base salary once at Texas Tech).

I know big-time coaches can be fired. But when they are, their golden parachutes are outlandish, too.

Meanwhile, N.C. State still needs a coach. Somewhere out there, a Mike Krzyzewski at Army glistens. But so do a whole lot of Les Robinsons.

Which one is Brady? Yes, Brady beat Duke this season, which Sendek did about as often as he had his driver's license renewed. LSU made it to the Final Four before laying a huge egg against UCLA.

But in nine years at LSU, Brady had only four 20-win seasons and barely a .500 record in the SEC. It's hardly been sustained excellence.

Maybe the coaching search goes beyond Brady. Maybe he becomes the third coach who listens to N.C. State, says no and gets a fat check from his current employer.

That's OK.

There's a great young coach in America somewhere who N.C. State can still locate. I don't know his name -- he could be any one of a dozen guys who have shown promise -- but he's going to be fantastic.

Can N.C. State find him?

it doesn't necessarily say that the guy (s) that will be fantastic will be here. It just says that there are guys out there that will become very good coaches. State just has to find one insted of find a Les

I didn't read 1 thing in there that I didn't agree with/made me think he was bashing state, actually sounds like he's on our side and really wants NCSU to get a great---- FANTASTIC coach.
