The only way you are going to be able to evaluate mid major coaches is by looking at the actual product on the court. What they did, how they did it, with what players, and against whom.

The stat sheet isn't going to tell you jack shit.

A&M
Quote :
"Gillispie has a career record for 51-42, but is 45-16 in the past two seasons "

Quote :
"He inherited a team that had gone 7-21 the year before with an 0-16 mark in Big 12 play. The program had not had a winning season in 11 years. The Aggies were picked to finish last in the rugged Big 12, but Gillispie was not about to let that happen. The Aggies exploded to a perfect 11-0 start and went on to finish 21-10, the biggest improvement in the country
"

FWIW, Before he got there, 0 winning seasons in 11 years. A&M is preseason #14 for next year... Gillispie's 4th year.

UTEP
Quote :
"The Miners finished 6-24 in his first season, but went 24-8 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2004[....] Gillispie was a finalist for national coach of the year honors"

Steve Lavin labeled him "The Miracle Worker".

...and I want him for our next head coach

Concerns:
- Texas guy
- May leave
- Recruiting (Great recruiter, but seems to only recruit Texas. He was a H.S. Head coach there, so that may be where all of his connections are. We're a long way from Texas

there are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Especially considering these coaches all have different backgrounds.

I'm not saying #14 is legit... but the man wins quickly after he walks into shitty situations.

Even if they're not the 14th (It may be 16?) best team in the nation, that's a huge accomplishment

if its some kind of slowdown offense we are going to be back to the "fire herb" game

At A&M he ran a slowdown offense, but that was becuase of talent. A&M was friggin terrible.

At UTEP, he was wide open. I believe they finished the season top 10 in scoring his last year there.

(Someone posted here earlier they averaged 80 points per game)

^^agreed. offense is very important. The new coach has got to realize that sometimes the only way to win a game is to outpace an opponent. We can't have another herb who stubbornly sticks by a wooden, fragile, unproductive offense because we have no plan B.

We have to be flexible and adapt to the flow of whatever seems to work.

Look everyone knows we can recruit in Texas.

A mere ten years ago we landed the Texan Assassin Ron Kelley.

And RK is back working in raleigh as of this week. coincidence? I think not.

RK this week, Gillespie next week.

Think big.
