I haven't entered any of the stuff on You Name it, Too, yet, but I've been doing the handwritten stuff. How is it entering the stuff in? Does it take a long time?

That's the tedious part, the hand written part is cake. It takes twice as long for me to enter it as it does to actually do it.

It takes me longer to do the bookwork than to enter it in the computer.

Anyone wanna work out a deal?

Have you guys had any issues with Aleks knocking you off? I've had it close on me several times and..... the graphics and data are sometimes missing. Very frustrating! Ughh. I think it's my darn Mac, though. I'm thinking that Aleks isn't very Mac-friendly.

i've had the same problems.

with Aleks, the section with bonds is the only one i have left. i only have to do the month of june with YNIT. gotta fix a couple of errors in may first. i need to get it finished this week so i dont have to worry about it anymore. i don't find either of these to be very beneficial.

Yeah Aleks sucks, it kicks you off or scrambles the original screen if you ask for an explanation or ask to print the explanation. I finished 100 percent of the Aleks a few weeks ago, and when I did, my life improved dramatically

Has anyone finished the You Name it Too? If so, can I look at it?

Haha...

I spent pretty half on easter break on ALEKS, and the bonds section is crazy hard, specially if you have not learned it yet. It was kinda BS how they said "Yeah, ALEKS only takes 14 hours" when it took me 30 hours (give or take 5-8 hours spent with it just on).

Hopefully You Name it Too will be easier (Jan-Mar seemed easy).

I just finished YNIT tonight...it appears to have a few errors in April, so I'm waiting on Koole's email to see what I need to fix. If you don't mind waiting Namwob, I'll help you out once I fix the mistakes.

I wish we could have a group meeting. And, I wish I had planned better for this.

For those who have finished both, what took you longer, Aleks or YNIT?

I can already tell you ALEKS takes longer...I just did April-June in 2 hours today, whereas I'm still at 19/160whatever on Aleks...that's going to be a weekend long project.

Here's a suggestion for ALEKS that helped me finish it.

Every time you start a problem you're even SLIGHTLY unsure of (the penalty system with ALEKS is horrible), click explain, then File -> Save Page as -> WhateverYouWannaCallIt.html

Now the creators were smart so you're gonna have to work around this. First thing, you MUST save with Firefox or Opera, Internet Explorer will not save the "charts" and stuff so it won't help you. Also, if you're gonna do ALEKS with Firefox or Opera, there will be times you have to refresh pages to get the charts to show (ALEKS is specifically made for Internet Explorer).

Now the pages saved, open up ANOTHER browser (so if you're using Firefox, I suggest using Opera or IE and vice versa) and open up that same file. For some reason if you use the same browser, ALEKS will detect this and start screwing up a bit. I honestly don't think you have to do this, but it worked better for me this way.

Now you'll be able to reference the explanations while doing the problem. Note however that this is not a COMPLETE safeguard because the problems do change in nature but it does help a lot if you really no idea what the hell you are doing. You should only have to correctly answer the problem 2 more times if you hit explanation the first time.

A final note, if you use Firefox or Opera, after every problem you finish, WRITE DOWN YOUR ANSWERS! Since Firefox and Opera are not configured for ALEKS, there are times when the buttons for "Next" and "Done" do not show up and you have to refresh the problem. By refreshing however, the problem clears your answer and you'll have to resubmit your answers and if you submit it incorrectly, it'll penalize you.

Hopefully this helps some of you, I wouldn't really call this "cheating" cause you're still doing the problem though. It's no different than having your book open to it I say

^ Good idea, but... Why couldn't you just do that and then open up another browser window and log into ALEKS (without having to save the explanations)? I did that the whole time and finished the thing in under a few hours. (I used, at most, five IE windows with some of those bonds problems... Too many variations in those damn things.)

Well, Koole says he found "lots of errors in cash, repair supplies, acc dep rep
equipment, interest payable, repair supplies expense, interest revenue and
interest expense". I found two of the errors (in repair supplies), but I can't find the others. If anyone has a correct copy of APR2 I could use to find my mistakes, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've found all the errors but Accumulated Depreciation Repair Equipment...I've got it as 90 in the "sell half of it for 800 dollars" adjustment, and 30 in the end of the month adjustment for the remaining half...since I don't have an error in Depreciation Expense at 30, the problem must be in the first one...but I don't have an error in the "Sold For Loss"...so could the error be in cash at 800 as well as the Acc Dep at 90? I did have errors in cash, but I thought I had found them all...

I'm not sure if this is it or not, but when you sold the asset, did you debit accumulated depreciation for the amount that was in there? I haven't even gotten to April yet, so I am not sure if I know what I am talking about, but I thought I'd try. I just remember from Aleks that you have to debit ACC depreciation when you sell the asset because ACC Dep's opening balance is a credit (the contra-asset). Also, the amt received goes into cash and the purchase price of the asset is credited to the asset account. The acc dep debit, the amt of loss debit and the amount of cash received debits should add up to the original purchase price. So, if the original purchase price was 25,000, acc depreciation was 5,000, amount received on sale was 15,000, then the loss would be 5,000 (enter in as a debit, because it's an expense), the acc dep of 5,000 is a debit, and the 15,000 sales price is a debit to cash and then you want to credit the purchase price of the asset (25k) to the asset account, so your debits are 25k and credits are 25k. I don't know if this helps or not.

I found the error this morning, it turns out I entered the wrong account number in an adjusting entry that was ironically an account I already had an error in, so I had to look on my VGL entry to catch it since I wrote down the right number in the book. Oh well, April is right now so I can submit May.

The trick to Aleks is to take notes of the problems you're having trouble with - they're really helpful, considering once you're done with the pie chart, you have to take a final. If you miss a question, you have to redo that piece of the pie, and then retake the final until you get it 100% right. Annoying and time consuming, but the notes helped me so much

YNIT:
MAY 1
You declared and paid a cash dividend equal to the remaining balance in the retained earnings account. To show the effect of this transaction, record the debit to RETAINED EARNINGS instead of Dividends Declared. (Ck #37). After this transaction--the retained earnings balance should be zero.

Do I Debit[/] Retained Earnings for the amount currently in retained earnings and [b]Credit Cash? I'm generally confused by the question

In the problem, it tells you to Debit Retained Earnings. Your source document is a check (therefore you're paying money out --- Credit Cash).

So, yeah, Debit Retained Earnings for whatever's left over after the first entry (I had $1,439) and Credit Cash.

so I am trying to enter January into the computer now and every time I put in the credit and the debit (I'm only on the first transaction) and hit "process" it erases the numerical values of the credit and debit, but leaves all of the descriptions. I tried to see if it "saved" the numbers or my entries and it didn't. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen? Thanks in advance.

does anyone know if we have to fill out the supplementary forms section of you name it, too? It consists of the AR ledger, AP ledger, Dep schedules, notes rec/payable, perpetual inv cards and stockholders' ledger. Do these need to be filled out in the book and turned in with everything else? thanks in advance for any info.
