"Moss Named Head Coach
April 20, 2006 09:20 PM

Benny Moss

APRIL 20, 2006 -- WECT Sports has learned Charlotte assistant Benny Moss is now UNCW's head basketball coach.

The announcement was made at a press conference Thursday in the Golden Hawk room at Trask Coliseum.

North Dakota State University scheduled a press conference via email regarding the Tim Miles decision.

According to sources cited by The Forum sports reporter Jeff Kolpack, Miles has rejected the job and will opt to stay at NDSU.

All of this news comes two days after the search committee made a unanimous recommendation to Capaccio that Moss be given the position. Moss completed his interviews Tuesday and according to one member of the search committee was "head and shoulders above the other candidates."

Wednesday morning an email sent by Assistant Athletic Director, Development Melissa Everitt to the Seahawk Club board members asking them to "provide their thoughts" on an attached coaching evaluation form and list in order their choice for head coach.

According to one board member Benny Moss was recommended overwhelmingly.

Despite all of that Capaccio went against the recommendations and offered the job to Miles. North Dakota State A.D. On Wednesday NDSU Athletic Director Gene Taylor confirmed that an offer had been made to Miles to become UNCW's next head basketball coach.

As of Wednesday afternoon Capaccio denied any offer had been made. When contacted by KVLY on Wednesday about accepting the position Miles would say only "I'll have a better answer for you in 24 hours."

In Moss's five years on the 49ers bench, Charlotte has won two League Titles, posted three 20 win seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times.

Before coming to Charlotte Moss was an assistant under Bobby Lutz at Pfeiffer where he finished his playing career. He's also had coaching stints at Phillips University and Henderson State.

Moss is the fifth candidate interviewed for the vacancy. He along with North Dakota State head coach Tim Miles and former UNCW assistant Byron Jones were the only candidates still under consideration. Texas assistant Rodney Terry and Kansas assistant Joe Dooley withdrew their names.

The position became available when Brad Brownell stepped down on March 31st to become the head coach at Wright State.

I wonder how long before this guy leaves for another mid-major who is on equal or lesser standing than UNCW.

They can't keep a bball coach to save their lives.
