"The as-yet-untitled "Star Trek" feature, the 11th since 1979, is aiming for a fall 2008

The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose Tom Cruise vehicle "Mission: Impossible III" will be released by Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows "Alias" and "Lost," will also help write and produce.

Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.

Dammit, this better not be another lame sci-fi shootemup flick like the last one.

ideas who will play the young kirk, spock, and whatever villian?

I'm going to have to jump on a band wagon that I saw on stardestroyer.net and say that Star Trek needs to be put away for at least a decade or two. As in, nobody is allowed to make a movie or another series that centers around Trek. The franchise has been milked to the point where dust is coming out of the teet, and it needs a long long long break. Even if nothing original will ever be made again, Trek needs to sit out long enough to get out of the minds of the viewers and out of pop culture altogether.

Although I heard that Enterprise actually started to get pretty good in season 4. I can neither confirm nor deny this, though, as I stopped watching after season 2 or so.

I actually tried watching Enterprise but the writing on that series was horrible.

They need to stop with the pop culture image and get back to what made TOS & TNG great.

Interesting, although I seriously doubt they could make a really spectacular one at this point.

Then again, none of the other movies beats Khan anyway.

It will be written by Abrams and his partners, and focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first mission. With Abrams at the helm, this should fulfill every fan boys dream, as long as their dream was to have a 'Star Trek' movie that's brilliant for about an hour and then rambling and unfocused and boring. Yea!

DS9 fucking rocked.

Voyager was "Hey lets steal a TNG episode!"

And then later on they sucked the borg plot device dry.

Honestly

Nobody gives a shit about Spock and Kirk.

There's no adventure in Star Trek lore thanks to the faggotry of Enterprise.

I mean seriously, how much can a series suck its own backround ?

I think the main problem with Star Trek right now is that there is no Villian.

They fucked up the Borg.

The klingons are old hat.

They fucked up Romulans too.

Now they need something that actually requires brainpower and creative talent to pull off, which paramount obviously has lacked for the better part of a decade.

a DS9 movie could be done, but since they're probably have to limit themselves to the station for most of the movie it would just feel like a 2 hour episode...

yea.

They'd also have to do some crazy story telling if they want it to take place after the show left off.

The writers did a good job in making sure everything got wrapped up so people couldn't come along later and butcher the story.

^^^ they could do a spinoff DS9 thing... but the only feasible story i can think of is something featuring Worf's time with the Klingons...

then again, a Worf-centric movie would actually do pretty well... i'd probably go see it

For real. In all of the Star Trek movies (except IV), the quality of the villian was what made or broke the movie.

As popular as Shather & Nemoy were, I don't see how theyre going to replace the actors w/o doing what star wars did and piss off half their fans with their new movies.

Honestly, I wish they'd scrap the idea of filling in the past time line and look a little more foward. Not a whole lot, maybe 15-25 years into the future. Have a villian from one of the past TNG or DS9 episodes to capitalize on. Or even something like Martog & Worf being high ups in the Empire & be forced by their honor to go to war with the Fed, and it be the Fed's fault (some kind of treachery or somthing)

^Because Gene Roddenbury wouldn't allow it. His vision of the future was much better reflected in TNG: clean and sterile, pacifistic and non-militant. He couldn't really pass that off in TOS because it would have sounded too much like communism (which is basically what TNG is), and so no network during the time of TOS would have dared aired it. But in any case, Roddenbury didn't want conflict or combat in Trek to begin with; everybody was suppose to get along nicely. I don't know if the whole "humans are better than everyone else and all alieans can learn something from us" thing came from Roddenbury or later writers, but this is basically what Roddenbury wanted. Or so I am told.

The reason TWOK had all those combat scenes and stuff was because Roddenbury didn't direct it. I guess after The Motion Picture, Paramount decided that Roddenbury shouldn't be allowed control of the Trek movies for a while. I think he got control back eventually, but by the time of The Undiscovered Country or so his health had deteriorated badly, and so he couldn't really do much to direct that film.

Throw in some Space above and beyond and that Universe with cat alien badguys and you got yourself a deal. And while your at it, have the Sliders roll threw during a cameo of SeaQuest.

I forgot the rule. Are even or odd numbers the sucky ones?

There is an 80% chance this will suck. They should just put the series down for 10 years and come back when they don't have some weak fucking characters, stories, acting, writing, directors. This is what happens when you have nerdy fucking fans who will cry like little bitches if you deviate from the canon and take risks.

The rule of thumb is that even-numbered movies are good and odd-numbered movies are bad.

I had to read other peoples' opinions and critiques of Star Trek before I could really begin to see the numerous problems with the series as a whole. No doubt there's some good series (most of TNG and DS9, as well as TOS), but even these suffer from the same problems. Like, I never noticed before how ALL problems are solved by technobabble. Instead of just sealing off a deck and removing all of the atmosphere to kill an intruder, bitches are always dealt with by disrupting their neural frequencies with a subspace phase-coherent plasma inducing mechatron emitter or some other bullshit. And the really ironic part is that a lot of the situations that Trek people get into are caused by some technobabble nonsense in the first place (case in point, most of Voyager, although it may be a little bit too easy to use Voyager as an example of all the bad things about Trek).

I dunno why I never noticed before, except that I wasn't looking or that I didn't care. I wouldn't say I was a Trek fanatic as a kid, I think it'd be going a little too far to even say that I was a Trekkie. I just liked Trek, and so maybe I wasn't prepared to criticize something that I liked.

I'd say either have a new TNG movie or start making DS9 movies

That's most of it. Most nerds have pretty crappy tastes (just like the general population), but their chosen genre is somewhat rare. Thus, we see two effects

1. They lap up any sci fi shit because it is rare.
2. They view criticism as unfair criticism of the genre rather accurate criticism of the stories.

The fact of the matter is a story in any genre is going to be good or bad for the same reasons. IMO, sci fi shit offers a huge opportunity for writers to be very imaginative. There's sooo much latitude to create and explore new worlds and societies. When you have sequels and spinoffs, you are almost wholly abandoning the inherent advantage of sci fi.

That's why I am glad the new BSG folks told the old ones to fuck off.

----

^yep. At this point, other than the DS9 characters, I don't give a fuck about what happens in the start trek universe. It's stale, boring, worn out.
