"Florida Atlantic men's basketball coach Matt Doherty has accepted an offer to coach at SMU, The Dallas Morning News reported in Monday's editions.

SMU would be the fourth stop in Matt Doherty's tenuous coaching career.
Florida Atlantic assistant coach Rex Walters confirmed the hiring to the The Palm Beach Post.

FAU athletic director Craig Angelos told The Palm Beach Post that a press conference was expected Monday in Dallas.

"I got the impression the terms were coming together for them, but I don't know for sure," Angelos said. "I think they are angling for an afternoon news conference. Whether it happens or not remains to be seen."

Doherty met with SMU president Gerald Turner on Sunday afternoon and agreed to terms, unidentified sources told the newspaper. Doherty is expected to meet with an 18-member search committee Monday afternoon for final approval. He likely will be introduced as the new coach Tuesday, the newspaper reported.

Both Turner and Doherty were unavailable for comment. Incoming athletic director Steve Orsini didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Doherty's salary this year at Florida Atlantic was $171,000 and he was to get annual raises for the duration of the seven-year contract, Angelos said. The deal also included a clause where Doherty would have to pay $200,000 to be released from the deal until he coached his second season.

Doherty would be replacing Jimmy Tubbs, who was fired in early April after the Mustangs finished 13-16.

Florida Atlantic had averaged only eight victories in the previous eight seasons, went 15-13 in what was Doherty's only season as coach.

SMU will be the fourth stop in Doherty's coaching career.

After seven seasons as an assistant at Kansas under current North Carolina coach Roy Williams, Doherty went to Notre Dame for the 1999-2000 season, going 22-15.

He took over the Tar Heels for the 2000-01 season. Doherty's first Carolina team went 26-7, was ranked No. 1 in the country late in the season and won a share of the ACC's regular-season title. All that helped earn him The Associated Press' coach of the year award.

But in 2001-02, his feuds with Carolina players becoming public and the Tar Heels went 8-20 -- the school's first losing season since 1962, Dean Smith's first at the school. A year later, North Carolina went 19-16. Labeled an underachiever, Doherty resigned with three years left on his contract, and Williams eventually replaced him in Chapel Hill."

Hes moving up the ladder now...haha too bad he wont be in the ACC again, so we can make fun of his hair

The funniest part about the whole UNC ordeal was that by resigning as head coach instead of letting UNC fire him Doherty lost his severance package.

Effectively, he just walked away from millions of dollars.

He just assumed UNC would "do the right thing" and give him his package but they didn't.

He said he was so emotional at the time that he didn't realize what he was doing by resigning.

This is why he REALLY hates Carolina... not only did they force him out but they really fucked him over financially.

^^ thats all true, except replace "unc" with "baddour and moeser." doherty had as many supporters as he did detractors, although he probably lumps them all together like you did

Doherty did himself no favors by being an ass to Dean. I heard through the grapevine that he told Dean he would need the big office in the Smith Center when he got the head coach title, Dean yielded to avoid controversy. You do that in C-H, and you're lucky to make it out alive, cash is irrelevant. Most people forget that Dean still has a very big hand in all basketball operations. Also, that basketball camp they run brings in some cash for the head coach, six figs, at least.

He also fired a lot of the longterm staff and replaced them...

i dont mean just ast coaches but secretaries, office workers, etc

Alumni would come visit and no one would know who they were in the office.

He burned a lot of bridges, pissed off his players, and didnt produce good records.

He made his own bed..

3 or 4 years ago i would have agreed with no hesitation

these days i'd have to say we would give any good high school team a run for their money (3A and below for sure)

we're not that bad anymore, we were one of the leading scoring teams in the nation for a good part of the season, went 9-11 in our conference, and to keep this relevant to the thread we only lost to Doh's team by 9 points

i mean, i ain't gonna BOAST BOAST BOAST about the camels in any way shape or form(cause i'm a realist), but i think we could handle most high school teams now...

but in the billy lee years, yeah, we'd prolly lose to a good high school team 9 times out of 10

i'm so glad we have a real coach now
but i'm sad we're moving out of the carter dome in a couple seasons
