^ yes, only get a dachshund if you are prepared to have a dog that will have a bad back at a very early age
and honestly, they can get really snippy as they get older, but that's probably due to their back hurting 4/24/2006 1:23:12 PM |

i had one who lived to be 15 and was very mobile up until his final year.
parents just got 2 dach puppies in februrary who are brothers.
Wonderful dogs, i always here the snippy and mean thing about them but in my experience none of mine have ever been that way. Its all about how you treat them. They are quite aloof at times though and will just want to do their own thing for a little while.
I'd recommend them...just don't let them jump down off your bed and stuff. We have the ramp and they love the damn thing.

Alot of small dogs actually require a good amount of excercise, surprisingly, like Boston Terriers etc....just about the only breed, other than chihuahua's that don't are miniature pinschers, i have one now, and my parents have one. They are little dogs with BIG attitudes. They'll run the house if you're not careful, but respond VERY well to discipline. Some are not very good around small children (mine HATES kids), but do well with older kids and adults coming in the house. They also have very few genetic problems so they're a pretty healthy breed. However, the biggest concern is that they can plump up and get fat REALLY quick, it takes a determined mind and a measuring cup to keep them trim!

if i were looking for a small dog (which i am not... personally like large breeds but anyway), i'd definitely look at a dachshund. most small dogs have potential health problems but if you do preventative stuff like ramps, small steps, etc, you can avoid a lot of that. (and too, keep their weight down by feeding it good food and not too much of it.). in general they are feisty little creatures that often have no clue that they are pint sized. good alert dogs (not guard!). like to play and wrestle. in my experience not snippy or aggressive. you will never have mice or roaches as they love chasing them down and killing them. good breed imo. 4/24/2006 1:41:54 PM |

My friend has one. She's kinda strange...she humps everyone's leg and is afraid of gloves and socks. She's all good with you petting her and walking by her as long as you don't have a glove or sock on. If you pet her with a glove on, she will attack the fuck out of your hand...if you walk by in your sock feet, she will attack your feet...as I said, she's kinda strange. 4/24/2006 2:12:24 PM |

i have always had med-large breed dogs, mostly the bigger spaniels but i want a dog that would suit my living arrangements present day and i think the dachsund will be a good fit for what i am looking for.
the puppy that i might get is a healthy girl pup. the woman is giving her away b/c she doesnt have the time to spend with her and she is moving so it sounds like a win win. the puppy is up on all her shots but i would have to get her fixed, and thats no problem. 4/24/2006 3:30:29 PM |

people that own them do not tend to think that dachshunds are mean, but ask someone who doesn't own one and they will say they are mean. I saw a lot of aggressive ones at the vet clinic, but i don't believe in aggressive breeds. Don't let it run all over you and/or other people and you shouldn't have a problem. They do have bad back problems and tend to be vocal. good luck! 4/24/2006 4:17:08 PM |

Nope, a lot of small dogs act like this because their owners treat them like babies and let them get away with murder. Thus the little punting dog becomes dominant and aggressive. Easy to fix with regular beatings. 4/24/2006 5:36:03 PM |

I love it...he only barks at strangers, but calms down quickly and gets friendly...he honestly doesn't stink that much either
only bad thing is his BAD BEHAVIOR...nigga will eat ANYTHING in sight at anytime. I'm talking money (change and dollars), tin foil straight from the roll, an entire box of Cadberry Chocolate Creme Eggs, the list goes on and on...too many vet trips due to eating something stupid
Keep a close eye on what it eats 4/24/2006 5:59:00 PM |

thats why i said you have to watch what they eat, they will plump up VERY quickly...mine started getting fat on 2/3 cup a day, but maintains his weight at 1/2 a cup...that .16666 of a cup evidently makes a big difference 4/24/2006 6:27:39 PM |

I have two dachshunds, they are completly polar opposites:
The male(7 years old) is big and fat and sleeps all day, mean over bones and food. can be grumpy at times. The female (2) is short and petite, very beautiful, sweet as everything, nicest dog you will ever meet.
It all depends on how you raise them as puppies, as to how they will turn out.
Me personally, I would take the dog, if you have the income to support it, but then again I'm quite biased over dachshunds. 4/24/2006 6:32:49 PM |

I adore my dachshund and a half
Weight control and baby gates are wonderful ways to prevent back problems. My full blooded dachshund allows us to pick her up/put her down to get on the furniture. The bed is way too high for her to jump off of.
My parents dachshund had to have back surgery. She is extremely small (6 pounds) and the vet thought it was mostly genetic issues since she was so young. Other than the price, the surgery was not too bad and she is completely normal, sans jumping on furniture. 4/24/2006 9:44:15 PM |

I grew up with dachsunds, and my parents are about to get two dachsund puppies. Some things to keep an eye on are stairs and furniture. Don't let them jump up onto furniture and don't let them jump down, have them come to you to pick them up or set them down (this is part of why our dogs had bad backs, as when my parents got them they didn't know that much about the breed but of course knew the basics of taking care of a dog). Don't let them run up or down stairs (this is more specific to them being miniatures, btw, a full dachsund could probably handle some stairs, but their short legs make it harder on their backs anyway). Keeping them living on one floor of the house, or, again, coming to you to go up or down stairs would be the safe way to go. If you have a backyard and a deck, build a ramp for them to go up and down to the deck (we did and the dogs loved it, they ran up and down the thing for hours once they figured out it was for them so they wouldn't break down at a young age).
They can get snippy like any other dog if they aren't socialized and trained. Just do that and you'll be fine. Keep in mind, however, that they can be some damned stubborn dogs when they get older! Make sure you have them how you want them when they're young. 4/25/2006 1:18:44 PM |

I have a mini dachsund, she's about 7 now and in perfect health..She's been slender her whole life and is really active, no problems whatsoever. We used to breed great Danes so she was a nice change of pace after we moved down here. I highly recommend. 4/25/2006 5:44:01 PM |

I have 2 chihuahua/fiest mixes. They are the sweetest and funniest dogs you will ever meet as long as you leave their nails alone. that is my fault for cutting them too short once on each dog. Otherwise they will lick you to death or demand all of your attention. I also agree that there are no aggresive breeds I have a 3/4 chow, 1/4 lab mix that is scared of his own shadow. it is all in how you raise the dog. I have seen some very mean dachshounds though (used to work in vet office) and my fair share or mean pitts. I have also seen some very sweet small dogs and pitts. I would adopt if I were you they can be some of the better dogs sometimes. Just don't let the dog get too aggresive when it is a puppy and you will be fine. Also introduce it to stangers while it is young it will be less likely to be aggresive towards them when older. This what we did with our chihuahuas. 4/25/2006 6:01:21 PM |

my parents used to breed them. rarely did they have bad backs. keeping them from jumping from high places is key to keeping them from having problems. they all were insanely friendly as well and never bit anyone or got "snippy" up till the day they died. great dogs.4/26/2006 9:51:54 AM |

^I guess i should have clarified....not ALL dachshunds will get bad backs, but they are much more prone to it than most other breeds. my min pin will be jumping up and down from high places until his knees break and his back probably won't go bad (though his right knee will, but thats due to the 40lb puppy i have that likes to jump on him )
i know it's biased, but nearly every dachshund that comes in to my hospital where i work either bites or has a bad back..or both! 4/26/2006 10:43:31 AM |

I adopted a dachshund from an agency. They're awsome dogs, just beware that they do get bad back problems due to overfeeding or being allowed to jump off high places. I'd definately reccomend the breed, though. They're very smart, love to be around you, and definately have a big dog personality.
If you want to adopted check out DRNA.org. 4/28/2006 10:59:12 AM |
