ok odd subject

but my Grandmother wants to move to Raleigh from Tampa
Where are some good rentals in Raleigh that would be suitable?

she's 70 and is in very good health. (no disabilities or such) so she doesnt need assisted living.
a retired community would be great but they're usually $$

i want to put her in a nice area of town. low crime, etc..
preferably away from alot of college kids. basically kinda quiet, families and people her age.
I was thinking around Cameron Village or 5 Points.

2 bedroom apartment/condo/townhouse/house
price under $550 or ~$600 including utilities.
pets ok would be nice but not necessary.

i've been renting houses for 5 yrs so i dont know what apartments/condos go for.
i sent her an apartment guide so she's been looking through it.

thanks!

When I was at State, my boss put her grandpa in the apartments right across from that new shopping area that's right on 70??? I can't think of the name of that place....movie theater, super wal-mart, target, dick's, BJ's, etc. Although the traffic right where he lives is kind bad, the apartment/condo complex is really nice and he really liked it. He said it was pretty quiet and loved the environment. It was also close to a golf course which he liked (I'm sure your grandma could care less about that).

He has a cat too...so pets are no problem. I think he's around 75 too...no need of assisted living.

I would suggest somewhere near garner/fuquay-varina or somewhere north. Of course, the farther north you go, the more expensive things get.

besides, cameron village and five points are both home to their share of college students/young professionals.

you're better off in north raleigh.

There are these small apartments right across the street from Evoo (on the corner of Fairview and Oberlin) that are nice. It is not a retirement community, but from what I've heard they usually don't let too many young people stay there, so there will be plenty of people your grandma's age there. Definitely check it out.

You're going to have to pick one of these two requirements.

north raleigh is fine too.
some college kids are fine.
i just dont want to put her around a bunch of partiers that are loud late at night

my friend lives in an apartment across from cameron village. $400 for a 1 bedroom so yes its possible to find one in that area.

like i said i'm open to other areas in Raleigh. those are just neighborhoods i like for her. she can get lost easily so covenience to a grocery store or shopping areas are important.

i live in Raleigh and want her in Raleigh so i can visit her a couple times a week.
i'm her only relative that gives a damn about her. she moved to florida to be with her son and he never calls/sees her and when he does he steals her $ and stuff.

thanks y'all

I finally remembered...Brier Creek is the shopping center.

I think this might be the apartment complex:

And yeah...like Woodfoot said, you should hook your g-ma up with my old boss' grandpa. He's tall and has some money.

^^That's not very bad for that area! I can vouch for the fact that the community is not loud at all, and is pretty safe (had a friend living there for the longest time).

Briar creek I'd assume. Awesome place, great atmosphere.... $Texas tho. since it's on a golfcourse. There's some townhouses a bit farther down the road which aren't so bad but they're 3 bedroom so they're a bit more expensive

and bobbydigital is right.... Nice and safe and .... 2 BR for 6xx$ dont mix well :x nice and safe is going to run around 700-800 probably more in places like cary, briar creek, and north raleigh

Might not be what you're looking for, but sumter square apartments are in a nice area in raleigh- just outside of cary which is supposed to be really safe. Its largely family oriented but has a significant minority of students. Its between crossroads shopping center & a little shopping center called Plaza West on Western Blvd that has a few places to eat, a grocery store, and a few shops. Some city busline runs through the area but I've never used it. Wolfline definitely does not extend out that far though.

This is my backyard.

http://sumtersquareapartments.com/photos.asp
They have a new office which isn't pictured there & a new fitness center (although they still maintain the old one too).

Its a great place to walk around. You can check out the features & other sections on the website. You might like the 2 bed room townhouse apartment (although the big picture is broken on the site I think).

It seems like its mostly working adults with families, it didn't scream grandma oriented off hand. But it couldn't hurt to put the information out there.

Not so fast, my friend. I live right up the street from Cameron Village, and pay $495/mo for a 1 br. apartment. The downsides are that it's small (566 sq. ft) and has no dishwasher. But otherwise, I'm very happy with it. It's an older but well kept complex. Not many students live there--it's a mix of people from their 20's through their 70's. Probably more older than younger. Cameron Village Condos II, left hand side of Daniels Street, right around the corner from Harris Teeter. There are some expensive places around there, but also plenty of reasonable ones, rental-wise...nice area, safe, everything within walking distance.

I'm not saying what you know and don't know. I don't know shit about five points. I do know about the Cameron Village area. And I'm fully aware of how small my apartment is; I'll trade space for a good value in a nice area. Some people don't want to make that deal.

As for two bedrooms, the particular buildings that I'm in only have 1br apartments. In the area I know of others though. Some friends of mine lived on the other side of Cameron Village, in a ~950 sq ft. 2 bedroom, for $650/mo until recently. So they're out there.

most places near downtown for assisted living are going to be crap... and she isn't going to get the care that she needs/deserves. If she can afford it, there is a nice assisted living place on Old Wake Forest Rd. next to North Ridge shopping center (near the intersection of Old Wake Forest/Falls of Neuse & Spring Forest/Lynn Rd.) Even further out in Wakefield (North Raleigh) there is also an entire assisted living area. Not sure on the rates on either one.

No matter where you decide would be a good place for her... please do lots of research. Talk to other family members, especially ones that are actually around and actively involved in their daily life. They will know the real quality of the location. Even the places that seem really nice will have plenty of flaws... so try to find the one with the fewest capabilities for failure. (A shortage of staff will always be an issue in these places, unless you're paying top $$)

The Gardens at Wakefield

hands down the best "retirement village" in the area. and i've seen a bunch. it's not an assisted living place. it's exactly what it's called, a retirement village. i actually used to work for the manager of the place before she took it over. she's a wonderful person and the activities she puts together would be fun for someone of any age.

The sumter square apartment that I live in is described as

Quote :
"
2 Bed X 1.5 Bath 1050 Sq. Ft.
This spacious townhouse floor plan features an eat-in kitchen, a utility room, washer and dryer connections and great closet space."

I don’t know about the 3 bedroom area of sumter square as much, the part that tends to cater a little more towards students, but on the townhouse side of the complex its always been a friendly, wave at your neighbors, small talk at the mail box kinda place. I’d totally give a grandma a drive by waving if I was still living there next year. Its definitely affordable for a college students budget, but still largely family oriented. I 'll miss it, been there for 2 years, but I'm moving to chapel hill soon.

A nice sized chunk of the students there are from Mu Beta Psi, an honorary music fraternity, not your stereotypical rowdy frat. So I don’t think the student minority would be a bad thing. Little kids outside yelling for the ice cream truck, or going to the daycare there, or getting on & off school buses seems like the rowdiest things get.

*the assisted living places i listed weren't for people with significant health problems... they're just so someone else is around if something happens. they're more like retirement communities. lots of older people have moved in to the area behind the house where my family lives. they're single story duplexes and they're usually a few up for rent every once in a while. (Also in Wakefield) She might be more interested in something like that.
