I just read on ESPN.com that they are adding the 5th BCS game for this upcoming year (this is old news)

I just had a question about who plays in it; the article on espn does a horrible job of explaining it

do they play the four bowl games and then choose two from there based on the standings to play for an "undisputed national title" or do they just have ten teams in it now instead of eight and still the top 2 just play for it?

Quote :
"BCS expanding to five games
Associated Press

PHOENIX -- For eight years, the Bowl Championship Series has created as much confusion as clarity.

And one year after it worked perfectly, with two unbeaten teams squaring off in a classic championship game, the BCS is changing again. And its top official wonders if fans will understand why.

"Just the fundamental format, I think, needs explanation," Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive said as the BCS' annual meetings opened here Monday.

The BCS is expanding to five games next year, with a new stand-alone national title game being added to the existing four bowls -- the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange.

Like the old format, the top two teams in the final BCS standings will play for the national title. Unlike the old format, they won't play in an existing bowl game. The title game will rotate among the four BCS sites beginning with the Fiesta in Glendale, Ariz., next January.

"I think one of the things that we need to be doing over the next several months is explaining the double-hosting model, which is in effect the national championship game rotating through the four bowls," Slive said. "I think there might be some confusion as to how the teams get to the [title] game."

It will help when the new game has a name and a title sponsor. That could be announced as early as Tuesday.

"We will [have a name] before we leave here," said Slive, who is starting his first of two years as BCS coordinator.

For the first time in three years the BCS meetings are generating little buzz.

Two years ago, the BCS responded to growing criticism by simplifying its standings formula, emphasizing the polls over the computers. Last season the formula stayed the same, but a new poll was created to replace The Associated Press Top 25. The AP poll was replaced by the Harris Interactive poll, which included former college football players, coaches and administrators, plus some media members.

There's little call for change this year, partly because the 2005 season played out perfectly from the BCS' perspective. Only two teams finished the regular season undefeated -- Southern California and Texas -- and they played for the BCS title in the Rose Bowl, with the Longhorns upsetting the defending champion Trojans.

The BCS' biggest change was adopted two years ago, when the fifth game was added in response to pressure to improve access for non-BCS conferences.

With more slots available, commissioners Monday discussed adding more at-large teams to the BCS-eligible pool. Under the present system, at-large teams must win nine games and be ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS standings. Commissioners are considering allowing lower-ranked at-large teams into the pool.

"The reason it came up, we raised it because you've added 25 percent more slots by going from eight to 10," Slive said. "Should we examine going to more than 12 [in the standings] as the cutoff for eligibility for at-large? We just started some dialogue today. We're going to continue to talk about that.

"I'm hoping that we'll come to some decision here," Slive said. "We may not. It's an important topic and we may want to talk about it more."

Any change would have to be approved by the BCS' presidential oversight committee."

top 10 teams play in the bcs bowls(3-10 playing in each of the 4 bowls).. top 2 playing in the NC game held at one of the locations of the 4 bowls.

ok, that is what i thought but i know last year that when they were talking about adding another game it was something like a "plus one" where after the four games the top 2 then played another game for the champ

so this just adds two more teams to the mix who are going to get to play in a BCS game and get a lot of money; it doesn't actually do anything to help the system when 3 major conf. teams go undefeated

first it says bowl#5 is a standalone national title bowl

then it says the national title will still rotate among the 4 old sites

confusing as fuck

at this rate the carquest bowl will become part of the bcs, and then everybody can share in the fun that is the bcs (and what about that third 12-0 team? let them have fun against utah, they dont really want to compete for the national title do they?)

^ i know

i thought the point of adding the fifth game was to get more of an undisputed national champ if more than 2 teams did go undefeated again

so i assume this will mean there will be 10 teams playing in the BCS... not a 4+1 format but a 5 game format...

the national title game will rotate, that actually makes sense to me...
but at this point, they may as well just make it a +1 format and forget this "inclusionist" mentality that they're developing, it's just going ot cause more problems

new idea

when there are 3 teams deserving

we play 6 quarters of AvsBvsC football

follow me here

A=#3 seed
B=#1 seed
C=#2 seed

First quarter
AvsC
Second quarter
AvsC
Third Quarter
AvsB
Fourth Quarter
AvsB
Fifth Quarter
BvsC
Sixth Quarter
BvsC

so everyone plays a half against the other team

the 3rd place team plays all 4 quarter first, because in theory they could be eliminated from contention most easily (if they get held to low points)

the 2nd place team has their time split but they get the chance for the comeback and get to see what the first place team is doing before they play them, also they are rested for their return against the #1 seed

and the first place team is both never out of contention and never playing completely fresh legs

highest combined score wins

someone get the BCS on the phone for me

why cant we just judge the seasons performance on a yearly basis? if there are only 2 deserving teams, then a committee will let them play for the national title. if there are 3 deserving teams, then the committee can either let 2 play 3 and the winner play 1, or maybe let a fourth team get in the mix (1vs4 plays 2vs3)?

reach around your waist, a few inches south of there in either a front or back pocket there is going to be something called a "wallet"

for the answer to your question, take out that "wallet" and look inside

you'll find your answer there

^^ and ^^^

sucks but it is the truth; no one is going to switch to any sort of a playoff in college fball until it is assured as much as many will be granted in a playoff and that is not going to happen

unless somehow the playoff is incorperated into the bowl system. but I think the smaller bowls would get really angry since the playoff would severely deminish their allure in favor of the playoff games.

as long as thyey didnt overlap playoff games with smaller bowls I dont thinktoo much would change. that's what I mean saying "within the bowl system" if they put on the first round games during the car care bowl .... guess which the average fan is going to watch.

again, they don't care whether anyone cares about their bowls... as long as they make a profit it doesn't matter...

They could have the lower level bowls pay out a set amount of money, and everyone plays them. Then the winner advances, and gets more money for playing in the next game....and so on..

then you get down to the "final 8" and have a plus 2 weekend, and make those 4 games the orange, rose, fiesta, and sugar bowls...and you end up playing 2 more weeks of football for the "final 4" and NC game.

It would add 6 more games to the national champion's season, so cut the schedule back to 11 games, give each team 2 byes, and start the season a week earlier.

or you could take the top 32 teams for the playoff and add smaller bowls for the other teams that didnt make it. It would be fun either way for fans and the teams wouldnt have all that down time between their last game and the national championship game.

uh

how do you plan on having a "+2 weekend in football"

ps

football isn't geared to have cinderellas like george mason a game away from the championship

imagine if Perdue ran the table somehow and got to play USC or Texas in the Nat'l Championship

it is geared the way it is to always have big teams playing in the big game

they travel better, they do better in the ratings

they produce more money

+2 weekends....one week for final 4 and another for the NC game...sorry.

I'm just thinking of something to end the controversy.

I think at least theoretically this will give mid-majors a better chance to get to a BCS game. However this new stand alone game is going to be weird at first. The stand alone game is going to be played on Jan. 8, basically a week after the traditional BCS games. This coming up year it will be played on Jan. 8 in Glendale, Arizona
Using this new formula this is what the 2005 BCS would have looked liked...

BCS Championship: Southern California (Pac 10) vs. Texas (Big 12).
Rose Bowl Game: Penn State (Big Ten) vs. At-Large (replacing USC).
Fiesta Bowl: West Virginia (Big East) vs. At Large (replacing Texas).
Orange Bowl: Florida State (ACC) vs. At Large.
Sugar Bowl: Georgia (SEC) vs. At Large.

The pool of "At Large" teams would have included Miami (FL) and Virginia Tech from the ACC, Oregon from the Pac-10, Ohio State from the Big Ten, LSU and Auburn from the SEC and Notre Dame.

this is fucking retarded, it should be an EXTRA game with the top two teams decided AFTER all of the BCS games

we have established that the season could still end with two undefeated teams... this is ridiculous

The problem with a +1 game only is that when there is a clear national champion like there was this year, it wont make any sense to have it.

If they're not going to go to a real playoff system, they ought to play the regular bowls, but actually play them regionally instead of changing them to accomodate the national championship game. Then, the winners play an extra weekend and play games by rankings 1v4 2v3, and winners play the national championship game the next week....a mini playoff that doesnt discredit the lower bowls anymore than they already are.

They wont do that though unless they can figure out some way to sell tickets ahead of time. Thats the whole problem with a playoff system in the first place....money...even though more games should lead to more money to compensate...oh well.

Birmingham Bowl? Might as well make a Raleigh Bowl.

I hope the ACC gets an Int. Bowl tie in, Toronto is probably my favorite N American city.
