I'd like to point out that Myst is supremely fucked up.
Anybody who has beaten EarthBound knows about the final boss.
Uninvited for the NES, perhaps.
I really hated ReDeads when I first saw them.
Eternal Darkness wasn't really THAT scary, just some parts were disturbing to see/hear. The World War I chapter freaked me out a little bit.

any takers?

Doom 3 was creepy, but I've never really gotten into the Silent Hill stuff, so it's probably creepier.

Doom 3 wasn't so much creepy as it was "OH SHIT FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK SHIT FUCK".

To me, at least. That game made me realize how much of a huge pussy I am.

I also liked the zombie part of Halflife 2. Those fast zombies make that noise and then climb up walls after you and shit!

I heard silent hill rocks, and I never got interested in Resident Evil with an exception for 4. You guys would dig Eternal Darkness. It's not really that scary, its just fucked up. The more enemies you run into, your "sanity meter" drops, and a bunch of bizarre effects and sounds begin to show up on the screen. Blood will drop from the ceiling, paintings will change into fucked up shit, you'll hear a bunch of weird noises, your guy starts babbling to himself, bugs start crawling all over the screen, the TV screen "shuts off", and the game sometimes tells you that it's erasing all your save data as an insanity effect. Cool stuff, check it out.

Hell yeah I remember Phantasmagoria. I remember specifically the part when that woman was talking or something and that hand/tentacle thing came out of the ceiling and grabbed her by the head.

I agree that the insanity effects on Eternal Darkness were awesome, one of my favourites was when you would try to use a med pack and the guy would just take out a gun and shoot himself in the head. Or you would defeat a boss and go into the next room and it would say "Thanks for playing the demo of Eternal Darkness, please contact Nintendo at ###-###-#### to order the full game"

Resident Evil 2 was creepy, especially towards the end in the laboratory.

I wouldn't include Silent Hill in there because I think that belongs to another genre.

Wasn't there a game where that was pretty creepy, where all you did was take photos of the dead?

One game that was never intentionally creepy was Tenchu: Stealth Assassins. No joke.

Yeah, in Fatal Frame there was nothing really to shoot, just take pictures.

Doesn't appeal to the majority of people. No wonder we didn't hear much about it.

Althought it's based on a true story supposedly.

true that.

i always used to think clocktower was creepy. it probably wouldnt be to me now. never played silent hill. so i'll say the Resident evil remake for GC and the original resident evil 2 and maybe eternal darkness

I almost peed my pants when the dogs jumped through the window in the beginning of Resident Evil 1. I was only like 12 though.

I was more surprised when it happened in Alone in the Dark, which they stole it from.

Hehe, yeah it's funny how much of resident evil seemed to be borrowed directly from alone in the dark. Of course, alone in the dark got all it's mythos almost entirely from the writings of h.p. lovecraft and I don't think they ever credited him.

re4 was fun & had some good suprise moments with sound or something popping out at you, i enjoyed Eternal Darkness too even though it was as big on the thrills & chills. nintendo has enough of a darkside to balance its lighter games like smash bro, zelda, metriod etc. even those games, like metroid, get dark ocassionally.

Crediting a book from a good while ago is different from crediting another work in teh same medium from like two years ago.

^Like the idea of something busting through a window is SO original.

Some unlikely nominees:
Super Metroid's intro was pretty creepy to me back in the day.
Zelda: Majora's Mask could be a little weird at some points.

I know it's not the most original idea ever.

But when you have one game come out

and then a few years later a very similar game comes out

and the most memorable moment from each game is the exact same thing

well, you know what I'm getting at.

^^^ Not too much, the works of h.p. lovecraft are still protected by copyright, and the holders defend those rights pretty strongly. Sure it's a bit older, but "dogs jumping through a window" carries a much more tenuous claim on originality than does the entire mythos of h.p. lovecraft.

Yeah, I see what you're getting at though, but there's so much imitation in video games it's hard to say what's immitation and what's paying homage to something.

Dino Crisis wasn't scary...in the sense it was dinosaurs. It's not like T-Rex can hide behind a curtain and go boo.
