if you are getting more than 100% of your daily amounts of all vitamins, minerals, etc....do you just expel the rest that you take in?

if so, why take big ol horse pill vitamins that claim to have 400% of something or another?

The RDA isn't the amount that you can absorb, it's just a guideline set by the FDA. You can absorb much more than the RDA.

i tutored a child of a doctor out in n. raleigh last year. She had her own vitamin company and i asked her about why there is so much of any one vitamin in a single pill. the answer was A. you can absorb more than just the rec. amount
and B. you don't absorb 100% of the pill itself.

Mega Men represent.

And you can definitely absorb more than 100% recommended amount. And some people need more than 100%, and certain vitamins its better to get more than 100%. And you do pee out a lot of it the vitamins you take in (my multi turns my piss yellow/green).

It's always better to take more than less...just in case (except for some vitamins...where it can hurt you to take more, but there are just a few of those, and there usually isn't enough in a multi-vitamin to cause any problems).

Also...if your multi-vitamin requires two a day, it's best to take one in the morning and one later in the day (if it's just one-a-day...try halfing it and doing the same thing). And be sure to take your vitamin with food.

unless you're anemic, there is no reason to supplement iron.

Vitamins A and D will mess you up bad if you take megadoses because they aren't released quickly.

if our bodies could only absorb "100%" or only what it needed, then there would be no obesity, now would there?

Because your body can only absorb so much at one time. If you have a two-a-day and take them both at the same time, it's more likely that you'll piss out more. Separate it and you'll absorb more. Even if they're time-released.

you can definately absorb more than 100% but you have to be aware that you can reach the upper limits of some vitamins and minerals which can be harmful. Iron, for instance, is very hard to get out of your body so taking too much can be harmful in the long run unless you're anemic and need high doses. And no you don't just expel the rest of what you can't take in.

^^I haven't looked at the directions for a two-a-day as i take a one-a-day. I was more referring to your comment about breaking up the one-a-day

seems to me that if you really needed half the dosage, the company would provide a pill half as small and make it a two-a-day pill.

i'm not trying to be a dick, i just wanted to know if you had any kind of proof or if it was just what you thought. And you already answered the question.

I mean...it's not necessary...but it won't hurt. It's just a suggestion. The benefits wouldn't be enough for me to put forth the effort to do it....but I know a lot of people who do.
