For Barnes, it was the recruiting class that he just got in, as well as having high schooln age children
For Calipari, he was just using us for a raise, never had the nuts to coach in the ACC
For Lavin, we were unable to meet his base salary that he was currently recieving from ESPN because of NC Law
For Beilein, we were not willing to pay the 3 million dollar buy-out (and there were some tax concerns)

None of the cases, besides Calipari was because they didnt want to come.

Which brings me to my point, what the hell is Lee Fowler thinking. If you know that you can never obtain someone, why waste your time and make the school into the laughing stock of the CBB world?

Find someone that you know you can get, get them, and save the embarrasement (see OU hiring Capel)... It is okay to shoot for the moon once and not get there (Barnes), but after that you need to go after coaches that are actually obtainable.

Again, UNC got past this with Roy. Don't know how or if we could too, but in the UNC system it isn't allowed

No idea if this was the breaking point with Lavin, but I know it was a big concern

We can pay him whatever we want.


This rule comes in if the coach is fired or asked to step down. That's when the guarantee comes in (Non incentive based)

If Herb had been fired, we would only have to pay him $200,000 per year for the rest of his contract (As I understand the situation). That's not to say we can't pay him more while he's here... just what we'll HAVE to pay him if he unwillingly is no longer the coach.

In order to get Roy from Kansas, I know they offered him alot... but they got some kind of waiver so that they could Guarantee him more money (To match his offer with Kansas).

If Lavin is guaranteed $750k per year, why leave for $200 k guaranteed in case something goes wrong?

If FOwler had not gone after Barnes, Calipari, Wright, etc.. he would have been cricified. People simply expected no one to turn us down. GO back and read any Fire Herb thread and its a pretty safe bet that people swore we could grab Rick Barnes, Nate McMillan, Mark Few, etc. without hesitation. This is all HERESAY and SPECULATION and COMPLETE BULLSHIT as far as I am concerned. I think every last bit of it has been made up by the media to keep state fans buying their papers and clicking on their websites. I have seen pictures of Lee Fowler and in all those pictures he appears to have a face and a head and I assume there is some pink shit inside of his head so he definately wouldnt have offered LAVIN the damned job. BARNES maybe, but LAVIN definately not.

Personally, I think Lavin offered Lavin the job and then turned it down to remind his lack of an audience that he used to be a shitty coach at a good school hoping that this ploy would give some real world credibility to his tv "analysis".

I am DISGUSTED by all of the NEGATIVE publicity that our school has gotten. Every damned article seems to trump up Carolina and Duke and then talk about how bad our fans are and how we drove off a great coach and how nobody would want to come here and how we will never compete with UNC and DUKE. I find it odd that they write this shit knowing that if State fans dont read it, nobody will and then they might have to think of something new and creative to write their next article about. Since none of it is "official" and everyone is content to read about "3rd party contacts" and speculation, then they can just write whatever they want.

I dont have much respect for people who write about sports for a living, I think they contribute absolutely nothing to society and I like to imagine them all on a deserted island writing the same story every day.... Today's Headline: NO FOOD, WERE ALL GONNA DIE! They are social parasites. In order to exist there must be other people to work real jobs and be interested in sports.

1. I am not on Pack Pride. I have posted sparsely on EPSN.com and Rivals. Never packpride.
