I liked the old silver and black LA Kings logo that looked like the Chevy emblem. the purple and gold one was ok.

Also I loved the Vancouver Canucks black and gold number with the circular logo.

I know I'm going to be told this isn't old school (Jets fans would be enraged, I know), but since they are no longer used, I'm going to go ahead with it.

I must have been one of the few people that loved this logo and jerseys (not to mention the big moon at center ice):

man i hated the Nordiques then and I hate the Avalanche now. also fuck the Crapitals.

The three teams I hate the most in order:
1. Flyers
2. Avalanche
3. Capitals (especially after that incident with Dale Hunter nailing Pierre Turgeon during the playoffs, and by no means am i a Islanders fan.)

^^ haha, i remember playing the Atlanta travel team back in the day, and they still were called the Jr. Flames. this was in the 90s mind you. the team left Atlanta in like 1980. funny thing is that there jerseys were blue instead of red. wtf? then they became the Jr. Knights a year or two after the Atlanta Knights of the IHL came in for a few years. they still used the Flames jerseys for their B team though. weird.

well it was the Blades when i started back in like the 1988-89 season (i was 4 years old), and later it became the Jr. Checkers when the Checkers came back to existence. funny thing is that when they were asking fans what they should call the team, the Blades name was second to the Checkers name in votes by the Charlotte community.

The organization was called CAHA, Charlotte Amateur Hockey Association. I remember that there were some people that were mad with the organization b/c of the politics, and started up another organization that played all of the North Carolina teams (W-S, Durham, Raleigh, etc.) and some other teams. I think it lasted 2 years, and then the organizations merged I think. The hockey organization I was with played Atlanta, Birmingham, Huntsville, Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, and some other teams. It also hosted the old Queen City Tournament (which had teams from Tampa all the way to Jersey come), consistently played in the Silver Stick Regional in Huntsville, and we played the other NC teams during the State Games. I was on a team that won a State Games gold medal, a Queen City Tournament, got hosed in the championship game in one QC tourney, got consistently hosed by the local refs in the Silver Stick Regional Tournament, and would often place 2nd or 3rd in the league. we were usually a good team that just could never get over the hump during my years playing on the team.

^^^ perhaps. wow the Monarchs. that takes me back. i remember the Checkers had a pre-season tournament and all the kids were watching the pros practice. well one of the Monarch players comes up to me and says "hey kid which stick do you want, eh?" I was like "how about that one." he was like well lets see. He skated around shot a little bit and said jokingly, "Eh, i like that one a lot," and gave me his other stick. i still have it. i was glowing for the rest of that day. did you hate the Raleigh punks as much as we did. they always seemed like cocky bastards to us. they played at the Cary Ice House. what crappy ass, small locker rooms they have there. i remember during a State Games game, i got a 5 min major boarding call after landing a hellacious hit, and a 10 and 2 checking from behind call. the player turned around at the last second as i was coming into check him from the side. needless to say i sat quite a bit during that game. my mom told me about how the opposing teams parents thought i was a goon, haha, yet i was truly one of the more classy players out there.

man i could have had one of those hot black and gold Vancouver jerseys back in the day, yet my brother somehow convinced me to get a Tampa Bay Lightnings Jersey. (i was very young and easily influenced at the time by my brother who's 8 years older than me) what happens you ask? i get the damn Lightnings Jersey and when we get back from our trip from wherever we were, he ends up wearing it to his high school that monday acting like it's his. this was back in the day when it was cool for anyone including rappers to wear hockey jerseys.

hah....I played in, don't laugh because its embarrassing, fayetteville! I started when we were the dragons and by the time i quit we were the force. I was tired of expecting to lose so I played in raliegh for the eagles for a year. We weren't that good but not badn by any means.

We went two years without winning a single game in fayetteville. It was horrible! We lost to charlotte like 22-1 the last year i played in fayetteville. It was horrible!

The atlanta team is not he Fire. I saw them at districts last month when I was reffin.

if somebody's posting the raleigh icecaps in here, we gotta have some old-school checkers representation

on a random side note, why were the icecaps moved to augusta? was it just lousy attendance?
and yes, the checkers had older neon blue and orange jersey's but all i got was an Xciting box when i tried to post the only one i could find

No. Though attendance got spotty at times, especially later on, weekend games and playoff games routinely sold out Dorton. They moved because the prevailing thought was that no one would pay to see the ECHL when the NHL was across the street.

makes sense, there can't be that many teams left in the echl that actually started play in the same city back in the day - now the echl has gone expansion crazy and includes west coast teams as well - why they haven't changed the league name i have no idea - guess they didn't feel like changing the league letterhead

wow i know we never played Fayetteville. it must have been the other organization. note, i'm pretty sure that if that was the other team, you didn't play the best team in Charlotte. i remember we played the other team in like an exhibition matchup, and absolutely destroyed them. i felt bad for some of their players b/c they had played with me before. i hated the politics that wen on with the organization i played for. i had been coached by the same coach, Steve Pelchet (sp?), since i had pretty much started. his son, Roger, was the same age as me, so we grew up playing always on the same team. i had some other assistant coaches that would come and go, but he stayed constant as the head coach. well one year, i think it was my first or second Bantamn league year, those fuckers bring in some holy than thou coach, that they put on a pedestal, to be the new head coach and forced Steve to be the assistant coach. wel this fucker cuts me from the damn team after a damn two session tryout. how can one judge a kid that was one of the best defenseman that the team had in two, one hour sessions. most of which wasn't even gametime situation simulation. the guy allowed some kid that was from Atlanta on the team, yet since the kid lived in Atlanta, he never came to practice and was going to just come to the games. he made it to like two weekend series before his parents made him not play for the Charlotte team anymore. now this is some of the stupidity that went on in the organizations final years before it merged with the other one. i said to hell with it and played house league and high school hockey at the rink i worked at for the remainder of my playing days. that was actually some of the more fun times i had playing hockey, and by then the talent level of the house league had grown a lot since when i had started. when i started the house league teams were full of people that well to put it bluntly, just plained sucked. by that time though hockey in Charlotte had grown a lot in popularity and the talent level in the house leagues was somewhat comparable to the travel teams. the travel teams anyways cost a lot of money, and i know for sure that i was definitely the poorest player on the team. my parents sacrificed a lot for me to play on that team. it was fun. i got to see a ton of ice rinks, and a lot of places. i got to play in The Omni in Atlanta, the old Nashville minor league team's arena, the Knoxville Cherokees arena, Dorton Arena, a minor league team in Alabama's arena, a Memphis arena, Independence/Cricket Arena, the Charlotte Coliseum when the were going to have a Rangers vs. Kings (Gretzky was on the team at this point in time) exhibition game (but the idiots sucked at taking care of the ice, and it was cancelled after warm-ups). there were another of other big places, and i got to play in most of those places mentioned above a numerous amount of times.

sorry for such the long read, but if you ever played hockey as a kid, you probably understand a lot of this. i was very versatile and played every position as a kid. i was best at defensemen and goalie though.

branding

the nhl is having enough problems keeping fans right now. any changes by their feeder leagues would not go well.

yeah Roger could be a douche every now and then. i think he had some anger management problems, which is one reason why he would get into fights on the ice more than most of the other guys. do you remember Brett the other Defensemen, Chris the chain smoker, little Matt, umm...the Dentist guy's sons (forgot their names, he provided cool black and orange mouthpieces to the team one year), umm...Jonathan, kind of big boned kid whose father was big, wore glasses and was the "Team Manager", which was mainly opening up the door for the defensemen during line changes. umm...a Canadian kid whose father helped coach the team for a little bit. they lived in Charleston, but made it to nearly every practice. there was no good youth hockey there at the time. hmm...Paul the Center. he kind of thought he was a hot shot, but he never played defense. i was Patrick the soft spoken kid who generally acted more mature than everyone else. my dad drove a big candy apple red Crown Victoria at the time. i remember being on the Amtrak train in Atlanta, and all the kids were jumping around and i was just sitting there acting like i had some sense. one guy Josh who was a couple of years older than us (played on the older teams), he had red hair. i know he went to Michigan and became a lawyer. another one of the guys that stands out that was a couple of years older was Michael. he was a mix of indian and black i believe.

Did you ever play Center at all during this time? Cause i thought you did for some reason.

I remember little Matt...he had the long blonde hair at the time and from what i remember him and this guy Brooks used to be on a line together.

And i think i remember Brett, if its Brett Austin. Him and I were real good friends back in the day but he was a little older than I too. I was pretty young so i only had one or two years with everyone before they all moved up.

And yeah i remember Josh, he was a great guy. I remember he went up north to play but had a heart condition or something and couldn't keep going. Do you know anything else about him?

Nah I mainly played defensemen or goalie. that group of guys only beat Memphis once, and i happened to be in the net for that game.

yeah Josh did have something like that. i remember when his parents' house burnt down. i think he still lives in Michigan, but his parents still live here. i know b/c my parents and his ran into each other not too long ago and he was with them. Josh was an awesome guy. i remember the first time i was gonna go out onto the ice and try it out. i was 4 at the time. it was at the Eastland Mall rink. he was out there skating and my parents were talking to his parents. i was starting out holding onto the boards trying to skate around. i got to the first bend over where the Zamboni came out, and he came up to me and said, "hey you'll never learn to be a hockey player if you hang on to the boards." something snapped in me, and i let go, and it just came real natural to me, like walking.

yeah it was Brett Austin, the son of the firefighter. i remember me and him stayed up practically all night playing floor hockey, and EA Sports NHL Hockey 93' during a sleepover. i remember we all went to this redheaded guy, Joey's place in the country. played some street hockey, watched Renegade and La Femme Nikita late at night, jumped on his trampoline, and then went out on his boat out on Lake Norman. i remember this most of all b/c it was his b-day and he had cake and ice cream. well i learned then and there that cake and ice cream eaten together gives me diarrhea, so i spent more time pooping than playing, haha.

oh hey do you remember the big, overweight guy from Nashville with black hair, and his son. he was coach for a season. he had some crazy demands. he wouldn't let me go to the pool and jacuzzi at the hotel to work out some of my aching leg muscles late at night. it's not like i was going in there to horse around or anything.

well Raleigh and Charlotte were like State and Carolina, the pre-Les years. while Carolina still had a better overall winning percentage against Charlotte, it was only around 58% of the time. Charlotte and Raleigh were generally the two better teams, then the youth hockey in Charlotte went to hell for awhile when we had the split between the two groups as mentioned. now if you're talking about the Charlotte teams that you might have regularly played that weren't the Jr. Checkers and perhaps regularly beat then that's another thing. Jeepin4x4 can vouch that up until that split the Charlotte teams were damn good, especially the group of older kids that were in the age group usually ahead of us. i think they actually won the Silver Stick Regional one year and went pretty far in the bigger tournament that they traveled to. now Atlanta on the other hand, for some reason we were like present day UNC to them and they were Duke. big rivalry, but we didn't beat them very regularly. we would be real happy if we could get one win in the three games of a weekend series against them. Memphis was always a hard out for us, but we didn't meet them regularly like Atlanta, Huntsville, or Knoxville.

I frickin' hated going to play Huntsville, not b/c we didn't beat them. Every time they would come out onto the ice for warm ups they'd fire up that damn song "Sweet Home Alabama" and their parents would give the ol' redneck woowee call. I hated that song when I was little, b/c they would never play anything else.

Hey Brass, do you ever remember going up to Spruce Pine, NC for some weekend games against various teams and staying in that old school hotel? I remember us playing against Gboro most of all cause they seemed so much bigger than us at the time. I miss that old rink, its a shame they tore it down, but i want to go stay another night in that old hotel.

and yeah i can vouch for the split. It was one of the reasons i stopped as early as i did. That and my dad was pretty demanding when it came to baseball. I think i'm gonna start playing mens league up here next fall cause i miss being on the ice.
