Saw him there in the back where the bar is watching the draft. I gave him the "what's going on nod," and he said "how ya doing?" I was like "great" and then gave a quick look at the projection screen and gave him the thumbs up, to you know say, "hey good job coach, you should be proud" type of thing. He understood. I didn't bother him after that. I really don't like to bother people while they're trying to eat with their family, but I wanted to give him some acknowledgement b/c of today. The coaches did a good job developing those guys on the D-line.

no our record sucked so that must mean our defensive players were not developed enough.

it means that every high school D-line prospect that just saw the draft is thinking "Amato might get my broke ass PAID if I go play at NC State"

i think mccargo is just as or more important in this.
not only can we say we had the first round pick, but we can say we took a mid level (at best) prospect and turned him into the 26th pick.

McCargo is a good example for bringing in talent we already have a decent shot at getting, but Williams is going to be a good example for people that have no interest in college because they know they'll be playing at the next level.

i really hope a amato booing incident doesn't happen this year like the Clemson game last year
amato is a damn good defensive coach and i would hate to see him go like herb

unlike Herb, I see our football program actually going somewhere with Amato. This draft season is proof of the direction he is taking the program, regardless of what our QB situation has been the last 2 years.

^^Two weeks after the booing this team turned around and finished strong.

Amato showed he was capable of change and it worked. The fans cant be mad at him after that, although he should have done something sooner. Herb was just a stubborn bitch.

you could also make an argument that a football program takes longer to develop than a basketball program

I don't think that's even an argument; more of a fact that football takes longer to develop than basketball.

I don't think anyone is calling for Amato to change his entire gameplan. I for one have found football to be so much more enjoyable under Amato than it was under O'Caine. There's only so many WR screen passes I can stand to watch in the same game, especially after they stopped working on the second attempt.

Stellar defense impresses me a lot more than high-powered offense, which is probably why I enjoy the Wolfpack and the Panthers so much.

i cant figure it out.
am i fan of defenses because i grew up watching cowher coach the steelers or do i just love defense and happened to watch the steelers?

side note. the first college football game i really remember was the 92 national title game.(#1 miami vs #2 bama). defense really is better than offense

if you're not a fan of defense, then don't EVER watch an SEC or Big 10 game. Unless you happen to be a fan of punters.

guys you are looking at this wrong,

if your players are great, but your team is not, then your coaching sucks

Carolina ran all over us this year and we had 3 d linemen in the first round

Chuck has nothing to do with the development of players anyway
most college head coachs only handle administrative duties and hardly show up at practice
Position coach, strength coach, and d coordinator but not chuck

either way bad football record but great draft record means bad coaching

it can also mean a developing team. Give the man at least 4-5 more years to prove himself. If he's not making bowl games 4 years from now, then you can bitch.

You guys are still fucking retarded

Our defense was number 1 in the nation, and top 10 last year in total yards. Thats great coaching and great players. Now, it might be shitty coaching on offense, but I dont think we have the players on offense.

Please, just stop talking about bad coaching when talking about our great d and bad record. The D was the only thing keeping us in games.

The UNC game was ONE GAME that our defense fucked up, but our offense still committed too many turnovers, and UNC ran a bunch of fucking trick/gadget plays and they got the majority of their yardage on a handful of big plays, not by dominating our D all day.

^^^you are an idiot

players can't simple come out of high school and become first round nfl draft material by themselves
and you can't possible have a #1 defense in the nation individually

The D-Line is Todd Stroud's accomplishment. There were some mumblings when Amato promoted the Strength & Conditioning coach to D-Line coach but he put 3 guys in the first round, 2 of which were nobodies coming out of highschool... Both Lawson and McCargo were 1* recruits and I believe it was McCargo who only had offers from NCSU and Richmond... fucking Richmond... yet he developed into the #26 pick. Buy Todd Stroud a beer and a fine hooker.

Exactly.

Look at how CLOSE a lot of those games were. Look at how we pulled out wins over superior teams even while scoring <20 points. Look at how few times we got blown out the past two years, even when we obviously had NO offense.

Our D is definitely not to blame.

Thats basically what I said on PP... only thing we can hope is that he has some loyalty to Amato for showing some faith in him and making him the D-Line coach when he wasn't exactly a proven commodity in that regard.

I love the BigT1e1n too but Its hardly all D. The style of play is so run heavy that its all field position battle. When there is a passing play it is pretty much always play-action. This is why Wide Receivers who make noise in the conference always become such darlings in the media... there aren't that many serious threats going deep. Its football for football fans, but not exactly the most thrilling.

So apparently, according to everything I've been reading in the past day based on these draft picks and Amato and whatnot, we should be expecting "major things" out of NC State football in the next couple years...so how many more years until the BCS bid?

or is this all smoke and mirrors as usual?

This was a little tidbit from over at PP that a member wrote about a WPC talk Amato gave:

I love this one...
Quote :
"of course he had a number of jokes including a story about his frosh year. he said he lived in tucker and his girlfrien back home had given him a picture to remember her by while in school. then one day she called him and told him that she had been with two men since he had left for college. he said that at least it took two guys to replace him. his gf asked him to send back her picture so he went to every room in tucker hall and collected pictures of girls from all the guys (he said some had clothes on, some not). he then sent about 25 pics to his gf and included a note saying: "I don't remember which one was yours but take it out and send the others back.""

Interesting take on fans...
Quote :
"he said that FSU fans learned to be championship fans from Nebraska and implied that we are learning it from VT. He was very complementary of our fans but pointed out that in 2004 when VT had 0 offensive yards after 3 quarters against us ther was not one boo to be heard at Lane."

Funny perspective on PR and a championship...
Quote :
"he then said that there is one person to blame for not having been in a NC game: Jamie Barnette. He said that if JB had been born one year later he would have been his starting QB his first ear and PR would have reshirted. then when we had the #1 D in America, PR would have been in his 5th year and we would have been in the national championship game."

Can't wait for football season.
