I think my sound card is Creative Labs Model 880100. My sound just quit working the other day, I un plugged my headphones aand later that day when I plugged them back in... nothing. I tested the speakers they don't work either and the headphone work on other computers.

In Control Panel Audio HQ says my driver is missing. I did a system restore to an earlier point when things were fine, that didn't work.

I've googled everywhere to try to download the driver, again no luck.

Suggestions, other than to use this piece of shit for target practice and get a new comp?

If that doesn't sound like the right info, how can I get it?

Check on on the card in the top left corner or on the chip itself you should see something like CT_ _ _ _. Need those 4 numbers.

[Edited on April 30, 2006 at 7:15 PM. Reason : looks like there might be a C-Media 880100 but no drivers]

It should only be held down by one screw. Unscrew and then pull the card out vertically.

yeah that's what it looks like one screw, but it look like it should pull out of the motherboard laterally as it appears in the pic.

Only all those resisters and shit are upside down from mine.

here's what I can find

Sound Blaster Live 5.1

Model: SB 0100

CD SPDIF

EMU 10K 1-SFF (off the chip)

IT 1
C40
PASS

I have serial number but I doubt that's of any use w/o contacting Creative.

Do you see anything useful?

This is what I needed. What you need to do is go to:

http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/

and download a driver for your OS for

Sound Blaster -> Live! -> Live! 5.1

The file you need is:

Sound Blaster Live! - LiveDrvUni-Pack (English)

ok I managed to take the thing out blow on it and put it back in... now I have at least 75% functionality... I guess it's like slapping or kicking many devices.

Should I still pursue the new driver?

The lag in performance could very well be the phones which are worn out as is pretty much this comp... I haven't tried my "good" speakers on it.

But it's working well, it did like 4 tours in 'Nam

If it kicks the bucket tommorow I'll fire a few rounds in its honor, it's been through some shit.

If it is working now then you don't need to mess with the drivers.

Who knows? It could have become loose in the pci slot or gotten dust in the headphone jack or any number of things.

Plugging stuff into and out of PCI/expansion slots while the computer is still on can be risky. 99.9% of the time, it won't do anything ... that 0.01% can screw some things up though.

Test the card in another person's machine ... eliminate whether its a hardware issue first. Then you can muck around on what in the software is causing it to act funny.

It's that 0.01% that always gets you. Thanks for the advice, I wasn't aware of that.

At work we had a few Dells shipped with Sound Blaster 5.1 cards in them and they were not seated properly. Naturally some of them would work, some of them wouldn't - after removing them then re-seating the cards they worked afterwards.

i wonder how many tech talk threads are over before they start b/c the user in the end took the time to ACTUALLY think about the problem instead of posting

^ a better question would be: how many threads are ended by pointing out the obvious?

Obvious to whom? There's no such thing as common sense or more ppl would have it. You have more knowledge in the field than most folks... but there are probably a lot of things that some ppl have forgotten more about than you'll ever know.

I was gonna use a shotgun actually... I was debating about which, but I think the Streetsweeper in my gallery would do nicely.
