I picked up a Yamaha seca II (xj600) today and damn if it doesn't redline in fith gear around 75mph. Could it possibly have come stock this way? I don't see how, but the only thing I can think of is someone changed sprockets, but why? It rides fine, but it sucks to not even be able to keep up with traffic on the beltline on a bike. I've done a few online searches, but haven't come up with much about this bike, so does anyone have any ideas as to what to do?

check if you still got the stock size srpockets (count the number of teeth on both sprockets)

the chances are the previous owner regeared it for betrer acceleration

and he is a slow ass driver so im sure he doesnt even know how fast it will go

actually, it does have 6 gears, so in 6th with it at redline according to the tach ~10krpms its at 70mph. I checked the rear sprocket today and its has 48 stamped on it, so its stock. I'm waiting right now for it to cool to get to the front sprocket to see if its stock. I'm amazed at this, it sucks honestly.

perhaps your speed sensor isn't right. May say only 70mph, but you could be going 100mph. Get someone else to help you see if your going the right speed.

well after reading this post i decided to go out and top my 00 yamaha R1 out in fith gear and it got to 153 at 10000 rpm still had 2k to go but i had to jump on the breaks.

Ok, definately 6 gears (and yes, i shifted into 6th), stock sprockets and the speedometer couldn't possibly be off by 40 miles per hour.

Never know, those olds bikes should have a mechanical speed sensor located on the front forks. It might not be rotating correct or something to that effect.

If you are redlining it in 6th gear, regardless of weight/wind resistance/etc, the gearing is still the same and you should be at the stock top speed as long as the gearing is stock. The only explination is that your gearing has been changed by a large amount or your speedo is off by a lot.

Could be jetted horribly and jsut not making any power?

I know I had a size too large main jet for awhile, and at WOT it would only go 80, if I used part throttle I could ease it up to 100+

When you made this top speed run, did you actually run it all the way to redline? The point is that if the engine is spinning a certain speed, the gearing is spinning a certain speed, and the rear tire is spinning a certain speed, all of which are independent of power output, drag, etc. The only way to be going slower in this case is to have the rear tire in a constant slip which I don't think was happening here. Did you let Igor take a look at it yet?

so i think I figured out what the problem is, the clutch was adjusted too far, so I loosened it up and it would easily do 100, so I rode it around a little bit and when I got gas I adjusted it back some. It ran fine for maybe 5 miles and while on the beltline I looked down the tach was way past redline, so i limped it home and no matter what i adjusted the clutch to it was back to how it was originally.

so, at least I know what it is, any ideas on why it all of a sudden went back to how it was after it rode fine for a few miles?

You may need to get a new clutch pack. That is pretty crazy if your clutch is slipping that much. Once it is to that point, a good chance that adjustments aren't going to do anything.

my first bike was a 92 xj600, it did pretty good but it wouldn't do more than about 120 wound all the way out in 6th
