This morning i was too tired to go eat so i decided to heat up yesturdays food that was wrapped nicely in aluminum foil. I've always known about foil and the microwave so i wrapped the foil wrapped food in several paper towels until no foil was exposed. I made sure none was exposed, put it in for 30 seconds and went to the bathroom. When i got back the microwave was still going but smoke was pouring out. THE MICROWAVE JUST CAUGHT ON FIRE. I alerted my suitemates and they helped me extinguish it but small particles and smoke got all over my room. I opened the window and used the fan to get the smoke out but the smell is still here and in all my stuff. I've tried fabreeze but that hasn't helped much.

Also, have any of you ever seen microwaves spontaneously combust? It was only 1 year old and i made sure no foil was exposed and could not be undone. I'm going to try and file a claim with kenmore after exams.

it would have just sparked if you didnt wrap it but since you wrapped it in paper towels thats what caused the fire

hepa filter based expensive machines, but we're talking several hundred bucks

also several cigar stores/magazines sell candles that help remove the odor of smoke

This is the funniest thing I have ever heard. Dude, covering up the metal with a paper towel doesn't do shit. OMG...lol...

Actually I just did a little reading, and I may be wrong about that.

^that is awful.

Was the foil touching any part of the microwave?

man you don't put aluminum foil in the microwave. bottom line. put ur food in a microwave safe bowl or wrap it in a paper towel minus the foil.

^Dude, I agree--I'd never do it. But the internets say it's okay under certain circumstances.

Metal + Microwave = BAD

no matter what, it doesn't matter if it is exposed. Just don't put metal things in the microwave, it isn't a good idea at all.

And Kenmore isn't gonna give you a new one unless you can lie about what happened.

If you would have watched the microwave for that 30 seconds instead of going to the bathroom you would have seen something was not right, specifically electricity arcing everywhere, and stopped it before serious damage occured

i've heard of places having a smoke smell to the point that the only way to get rid of it was with new appliances and a remodled kitchen

That settles it.

I now have a definitive answer for the question
"Who is the worlds biggest dumbass?"

What has this world come to?

METAL + MICROVAVE =

(And as far as your smoke smell, you'll probably have to scrub all the walls and wash all the furniture/upholstery/carpet. Febreeze is just going to cover it up at this point.)

if you read the owners manual for most newer microwaves, it says that it is ok to put aluminum foil in them. Some even come with a metal rack or a heating coil inside the microwave.

I was house-sitting for my brother and he neglected to tell me that his microwave made a horrible noise the last time he used it. So, I stuck a bowl of soup in there, walked away, and heard this awful scream come from the microwave. I shut it off and when I opened the door there was literally a wall of smoke in there so thick I couldn't even see the bowl of soup.

Then I was like "OH NO, RADIATION!!!" and I ran away and didn't come back.

Fuck house sitting. And microwaves.

yeah, it has been said but the paper towels just allowed it to catch on fire. Without them it would have just sparked.

I still don't get what the whole wrapping it up in paper towels was supposed to do. I mean that's like trying to extinguish a fire with gas. And filing a claim isn't going to help you much unless you lie about what happened like someone else said. Usually companies don't cover negligence.

But on another note, that would have been cool to watch

Someone came in my house and smoked several cigs and got a godawful smell in my house (I hate the smell of smoke). So, I bought some of this stuff...it worked really really well. It also worked in the car of my friend who smokes...I got it at the grocery store, so maybe you could find it there?

metal in the microwave won't cause a problem unless it is thin (foil) or has sharp points (also foil)

You can also play with matches while standing knee-deep in kerosene, but it's not highly recommended

that's a horrible comparison

if you light a match knee deep in kerosene, shit's probably gonna catch on fire (probably)

If you put a spoon in a microwave, nothing will happen

The point is, sure, you can go for it, but you're really pushing your luck.

It's not really pushing your luck at all if you know what you're putting in there. And unless there is something ignitable, the worst that will happen is some sparks will fly.

like someone mentioned earlier, many microwaves come with metal racks inside them

Quote :
"Tin foil, aluminium foil, ceramics decorated with metal, and products containing other metals can cause sparks when they are used in a microwave. Microwaving small, smooth, solid metal objects without pointed ends (for example, a spoon) can sometimes be safe, and usually does not produce sparking (putting a spoon into a liquid also helps prevent superheating). Forks, however, will readily produce sparks when placed in the microwave. This is because while it acts as an antenna, absorbing microwave radiation just like other metal objects such as the spoon, the pointed ends of the fork will act to concentrate the electric field formed at the tips. This has the effect of exceeding the dielectric breakdown gradient of air, about 3 megavolts per meter (3×106V/m), causing sparks to form. This effect is somewhat analogous to the effect of St. Elmo's fire.

The effect can be seen clearly on a CD or DVD which has been cooked in a microwave. When the electrical field builds up sufficiently, the resulting electric current vaporizes the metal film and melts the plastic in the disc, leaving a visible pattern of concentric and radial scars.

The formation of sparks on sharp metal objects may be prevented by placing the utensil in some food or liquid while in the microwave, as this has the effect of preferentially conductively dissipating the charge before the electric fields can build to the point where they exceed the breakdown value of air. Any time dielectric breakdown occurs in air, some ozone and nitrogen oxides are formed, both of which are toxic. Finally, as mentioned previously, any metal or conductive object placed into the microwave will act as an antenna, and its electrons will thus be thrashed back and forth through the object (a high frequency alternating current) causing some ohmic heating to occur. The extent of this heating effect will vary depending on the size, shape and conductivity of the object."

bottom line, dont put sharp or pointy metal things in microwaves, and dont put FOIL in a fucking microwave

Kenmore will laugh at you cxmai

This is only the 2nd most retarded thing I've seen done with a microwave, the first being my old roommate actually fucking up EasyMac in the microwave

[Edited on May 3, 2006 at 1:55 PM. Reason : ^ its the sharp points/edges that cause arcing, the metal rack has none]

We learned in PY that you can put thick metal-like a spoon- in a microwave, but not tin foil or any thin metal. But whether wrapped in paper towels or not, it would have still caught fire--not just sparked.

But still, this was retarded. "I'm too lazy to unwrap it, so I'll just wrap it up more. Maybe I can trick the microwaves and they'll never know aluminum is present."
