my car wouldnt start today, had AAA tow it and run a diag.

they said i needed a new starter, and that + the diag. =$369

THEN they said both my axles are blown out... WTF? I have never heard of this before
(and pardon me if this is a dumb question but i'm a complete automotive n00b). they said it would run me $392 for both.

Can anybody explain this axle blow out shit? Am I getting ripped off?

explain what?

the drive axles may not be completely worthless, but the boots may be torn.. if they're not clicking, you can put it off for at least a little while, but you dont want one of the cv joints to fail... bad things happen

you would save a lot if you decided to change the axles yourself.. its not too hard, but takes awhile and can get kinda messy... or just contact zxappeal he may do it...

you could also change the starter yourself.. its pretty easy, and that would save you some $$ on labor...

Wait, the car won't crank and they are saying your axles are blown out? If it's anything more than a cracked boot like beethead said you need to ask how they can tell the axles are bad on a car that won't run.

If the boots are torn, they recommend replacing the axle. It is that simple. They don't know how long they have been torn, and how much grease is left in them. Simple liability there.

They check over every car that comes in. If it has a starter problem, then they will also tell you everything else that is wrong with the car. Your starter can be bad and still start your car intermitently.
