what should i use to degrease and clean my bicycle chain?

engine degreaser? bycicle chains dont have rubber seals like motorcycle onse do so ou should be fine.

i usually wash my motorcycle chain in transmission fluid every time i have it off. when its on the bike i just blow it off with compressed air then lube it.

carb cleaner (not while on the bike)

then use a good, wet wax based lube

or if you balla, use pro lube

if you wanna do it bike shop style you get the citrus degreaser, hell i forget the name, and use tri-flow to lube it.


all can be found at the bike shop for pretty cheap. the tri-flow is good for lasting wear due to the teflon in it to help protect from trail/road crap

yeh i have some citrus stuff and it works really well. biodegrabable too so you can just dump it down the drain. well. i guess theres old grease in it.. but thats ok i guess.

^,^^ you mean bike shop selling to the public style? I may be wrong but i don't know of any shop that uses that expensive citrus shit you buy there to clean chains, most have a parts washer that recycles a degreaser/solvent just like an auto shop.

or dont waste your money, do what tkeaton said, and have something that works alot better...tough choice, but i do understand that you "have" do do it the way you who asked thinks is right...its not like i've ever worked at or been around a bike shop much

if you cant get it at the bike shop (you should be able to) go by REI, they have everything you need

or go to wal mart and get carb cleaner...it works better and is tons cheaper than citrus degreaser or whatever other shit you get at a bike shop...i don't think i've mentioned that before though, then get some leub from a bike shop

jsut find sombody with acess to a mahcine shop and have the sneak it in and run cleaner over it there. Msot shops have at the very least a manual parts wash station with a pump and a filter pack, does a damn good job of getting stuff clean.

ohh and choose liquid vs wax based lube based on riding conditions.
if you're going to default to one i guess wax would be the one i'd choose

^^I guess you cannot read well enough to understand that i said to find sombody who works at, or has free acess to a shop, and have them sneak it into a load of other stuff. I take parts in all the time when going onto a jobsite with an in house machine shop, its never been a problem to get stuff worked on or cleaned as msot of the time at the inustrial plants i go to half the guys at the shop are bored out of there minds. Its differnt at a independent shop, but then, i have never had to pay out of pocket for anythign like that, i always work out a way to get it free.
