Someone I know received a call today to contact Student Conduct in regards to an email Paul Cousins received regarding the student.
The student has no ideas what this is regarding (they do not cheat and have not received a CAT) and when they asked for information the office said that they had released all they would until the student met with Mr Cousins.

Has anyone had this happen and any ideas what it might mean? On the website it only mentions academic violations being first initiated by the proffessor and that the proffessor would contact the student. Other violations always include a CAT being issued.

This is odd. I'd take the stance that I was a busy person and that unless I had a reason to give this priority in my life (i.e. the reason they wanted to see me), I wouldn't be avaliable for a meeting until sometime in the distance future (i.e. in a month or two or three). After all, I do have other things to do and I have people to see who tell me what they're up to and why I should sacrifice my valuable time to see them.

I would probably say "Tell me why you need me, then I'll come."

And then Paul Cousins would have me trespassed, track me down, and anally fist me. Because that's how he rolls.

I would call and see what he says, if the kid knows he/she didn't do anything then I wouldn't worry about it. But I also wouldn't take time out of my day to go meet with him unless he told me what it was concerning.

I would tell them that you need to check your schedule and you will call them back within a couple of days.

Then, never call.

When they call you the next week, ignore their call, then call them back the following week after-hours and leave a message apologizing that you've been so busy. Don't say anything about when you'll be available.

then ignore them forever after that.

Could this be in regard to a different student being investigated & they are looking for information about what the student did?

That's all I can think of.

^ even so, why should the student take time out of his busy schedule to meet with someone who has as nasty a track-record as Cousins?

Paul Cousin's isn't quite the monster you all make him out to be. That said, blowing off the OSC when there's a issue out there isn't a good move...just in case your friend slips up in the future, they don't want to have enemies in OSC. That doesn't have anything to do with Paul really...that's any genuine bureaucracy.

I think if your friend called, asked to talk to Paul directly, rather than having his secretary as the middle person, he/she'd get some answers. It's the end of the year and it's not that hard to believe that students might have other obligations than coming in from meetings.

its not that hard to not slip up.

don't drink underage. don't cheat. don't post compromising pics of other students.

go ahead and blow those guys off.

i had this happen to me in 2002 - there was a student with the same name as mine and i got emailed regarding a drug incident with him - the OSC was too lazy to see if they emailed the right person - i called them up to ask what it was about and they told me to come in to talk about it and the guy on the phone finally coughed up the info then i laughed at him and told him to go check his records and hung up

just a little more info:

the student was told NOT to contact Paul Cousins directly

Also -- when the student called they would not release the information

so they went to Student Conduct and they still would not say what it was about but only that the student had to talk to Paul Cousins in person.

Although I'll agree with Kay_Yow about Paul Cousins not being a monster, Student Conduct does seem to pride itself on high-pressure tactics. Whether it's an incident involving him directly, or if they just want information on someone else, he can expect fairly intense encouragement to confess, elaborate, etc etc etc... anything to get him voluntarily talking, and providing information that OSC can use at their discretion.

Tell him to grab a printed copy of the Code of Student Conduct. Go over it end-to-end. Bring a witness if possible (I don't remember at what times the Code allows witnesses). And generally keep his mouth shut.

Hmm. That's some super-secret stuff there, plus it seems like they're kind of flexing their importance. "You do not speak to Paul Cousins unless spoken to. His time is more important than yours. You will come in, you will wait until he feels like seeing you, and you will be kept in the dark until The Man Himself deigns to enlighten you."

People There's only three people in the office there who can release info as to why you are being called in. They are actually protecting your rights by not blabbing to the whole world whats going on. The secretary upfront can't tell you crap. It may not be anything but until you make an appointment to see him or speak to him on the phone then your friend isn't gonna know anything. Also I strongly advise not to ignore it as most people have suggested on here. Student conduct will simply put a hold on your account and you wont be able to register for classes until you talk with them...and by then they will be pissed

I'm sorry, but this story sounds really fishy.

Don't contact Paul directly? hint number 1

also, the best thing your friend in this hypothetical nonexistant story to do would have been to ignore the email.

this is what happened to me when i got called in for that bullshit harassment crap. tell your friend to get ahold of paul cousins on the phone, and ask him what's up (like everyone suggested). then, he/she should gather material to defend his/her case. you shouldn't ever walk into a situation like this without atleast some of the basic ammo. it's going to be a rather "informal" meeting. he'll be like, "accuser" said, "blah, blah, blah...". then, your friend will be asked to respond. if it's a serious matter, he/she should leave immediately and seek legal counsel.

the call is basically paul cousins way of saying, "look, someone filed a complaint/report against you. i just want to see what you have to say. it's not a serious matter at this point." if you scale the severity of it from 1-5, a phone call would be a 1.

fuck him. he's been nothing but treat students as guilty until proven innocent. he should have to jump through hoops of fire before you do anything for him.

if they tell the student not to contact him directly, then contact him directly. they have no right to say that a student cannot have contact with someone who appears to be threatening them.
