If I have one DDR266 chip can I put it in a motherboard that's say DDR 400. WIll it just slow the PC down or would I have to upgrade and get new ram?

It will run at the 266 speed. Also if you put a 400 chip and a 266 chip in the motherboard it will run both at 266. Buy new RAM.
