so I'm a little scared about my chemistry grade
just wondering if y'all had any advice on how to break it to the parents that I did bad in there again...chemistry really isn't my strong point and I worked really hard.
Oh and my dad...well honestly I would rather jump in front of a train than tell him...but I'm not gonna do it...so if y'all have the parents like I do...advice would be awesome 5/9/2006 1:12:56 AM |

1) change your password, and act like you dont know what the hell is going on
2) its probably time to cut the ambilical(sp?) chord
3) Just tell them you tried real hard, but you just didnt do very well, and thats the way the shit falls sometimes. Then tell them they you would have done better if they werent pressuring you so bad it stressed you out.

tell them there's still a lot of college left. I got a C+ in CH101 because it was my 1st semester and I was still in that "I don't need to study... I breezed through high school" mode and didn't study and missed more class than I should have. But I am looking to graduate magna cum laude still. 5/9/2006 1:45:06 AM |

Tell him straight up that you WILL pass it and do well next time, or else he can wreck havoc on you.
Then you take it again next semester and rock it. And just in case you haven't figured it out, you better start making good grades in courses like "chemistry". The difficulty goes up and the consequences of your grades become magnified. 5/9/2006 2:03:19 AM |

I wish that my dad didn't graduate from here with aerospace engineering cause the stuff that I'm having trouble with just comes naturally to him...and he can't ever seem to understand that just cause he can pick that up like that doesn't mean that I can
thanks for the advice... 5/9/2006 3:10:21 AM |

Maybe I'm missing something ... but you are still required to tell your parents your grades? That nonsense ended for me in 9th grade ... I was responsible enough then to scold myself for poor grades and I'm responsible enough now to scold myself for poor grades.
I'm going to give five pieces of advice:
1) "its probably time to cut the ambilical chord" 2) "tell them there's still a lot of college left" 3) Get OUT of Aerospace if you are NOT enjoying it. Talk to your advisor ... talk to MULTIPLE advisors about different majors. 4) Enjoy college. Not sure if you are or aren't ... but things like this really shouldn't be concerning you at this point in your life. 5) Work out the trust issues with your parents. They don't need direct access to my grades or my email ... if they want to know, they can ask me and I'll tell them. 5/9/2006 6:20:49 AM |

^^^if your parents are paying for your school...it is very reasonable for them to want to know your grades...and them paying ~2200 a semester says that you owe it to them to tell them your grades.
now, the issue of them being very angry with your best effort not being good enough is a different matter. but i don't think their right to know should be in question.

I failed a couple classes when I was a freshman and I turned out alright.. I managed to pull my gpa up to a 3.25 after an entire year of horrible freshman grades. As far as breaking the news to your parents, telling them straight up might be better than trying to hide it. I really expected my parents to either cut me off or try to ground me, or even my dad to beat the shit out of me when I got my first semester grades back. But when I told them, their reaction was "At this point you have to realize it's your life you're messing up. Keep in mind, if you fail out of college, we won't support you."

According to FERPA you don't have to show them your grades unless they provide at least 50% of your living expenses, and they have to provide proof. Just so you know. 5/9/2006 12:40:19 PM |

I've failed before, and I tried to hide it from my parents.... It's not a good idea. It really sucked having to face them. They ended up finding out when the school mailed my class schedule/degree information to my house over the summer. But they were more disappointed that I didn't tell them earlier when I was having problems with the class, and I didn't tell them when I failed it. They didn't take the F itself so badly.
Go ahead and tell them- especially if they pay your tuition, living expenses, etc.- it'll suck, but once they know, you don't have to be paranoid that they'll somehow find out, and you won't have to give evasive answers/lie if they ask you about your classes/grades. 5/9/2006 1:17:22 PM |

yeah, Jere's comment wasn't very constructive. but if someones in their couple of years in college theres still time to explore majors. theres no way to know everything thats available coming fresh out of high school. sometimes i find that i make bad grades even when i feel like i'm trying just b/c the stuff is so uninteresting. finding a more interesting course of study could help. i'm don't know the thread makers level of interest in chemistry though so this is more of a general comment rather than specific advice. 5/9/2006 3:04:18 PM |

Your parents will understand if you made good grades in the rest of your classes and performed poorly in just chemistry. This will show them chemistry isn't your strong point and they'll probably believe you when you say you tried your best. 5/9/2006 5:51:43 PM |

Not necessarily. If chem 101 is the only chem she has to take, there's no reason for her to switch majors.
My major requires CH 101, and we have one more chem-based course, but that class is more theoretical with the chem. You can get by just fine without CH 101 - it'll be a bit more difficult, though.
I squeezed by with Warren with a C- (and I have NO clue how, considering that I quit with the 3rd WA, didn't study for tests, and even looking back at the notes now, everything he taught that I hadn't seen in HS is still Greek to me.)
sawahash - if you're in a major just b/c your dad graduated from it, you need to take some time and decide what you want...and it's not always what the parents want/expect. You also need to do your best to make your father understand it's OK for you to do things differently than he has wanted/expected/planned for. The sooner you two work this out, the better.

I'm curious as to why.5/9/2006 6:01:56 PM |
sawahash All American 35321 Posts user info edit post |
No I'm not majoring in the same thing as my dad...I'm in biology...I was saying that because my dad was so good at chemistry he just doesn't understand how I have trouble with it. Chemistry is the only class this semester that I struggled with the most and I went to most of the SI sessions and I only missed two classes...when I had the flu.
But all I keep thinking about was how my dad reacted last semester when I failed chemistry and I know it will be twice as bad this time...
Oh and yeah basically my parents are still supporting me at this moment...it's not really an option for me to not let them know my grades
but thanks for the advise guys...and just knowing I'm not the only one in this boat helps me out

^^ because unless I've missed where she said her parents weren't paying for anything, I made the assumption that they were. and although FERPA says you don't have to show them your grades, I think they have a little bit of leverage to sorta bypass that. 5/9/2006 10:37:22 PM |
