I recently changed my alternator in my 1991 YJ (4.0) and now when I first crank it up, and drive it, I hear some weird screeching noises coming from under the hood. It sounds like the belt but i can't see why it would be doing it.
It happens pretty much when I first crank it up and drive. Mainly above the 1500 rmp mark. After about a few minutes of it, it'll stop.

how can I get tension back on it? I thought the alternator acts as the tension pulley. 5/10/2006 8:05:25 AM |

1. Loosen alternator bolts. 2. pry back on alternator. You want your belt to flex about 1/4" to 1/2" when you push on it with your thumb. 3. Tighten alternator bolts while prying back on alternator.
Jesus fucking Christmas. If you put the thing on, then you would have noticed all this...I would hope. 5/10/2006 9:20:19 AM |

i'm not sure if it's the same on the older 4.0's but on my 2.5 and all the inline jeep engines i've worked on, you have a belt tensioner to the left of and below the power steering pump. should be a 15 mm IIRC. loosen the bolt on the pulley and tighten that sucker down. problem solved........hopefully 5/10/2006 12:07:20 PM |
