does anyone know of a garage that runs free/cheap diagnostic tests?

I'm pretty sure that the oxygen sensor went bad in my truck but I don't know for sure. this is the first vehicle that i've had to worry about the emissions stuff. any ideas about how much replacing the sensor will run?

Is it after a 96? Go to jiffy lube and get it scanned for free.

o2 sensors can get expensive. and i have no idea if they'll replace it there.

that's what i'm afraid of, and my truck is 2 months out of inspection, so i sorta need to take care of it, and emissions is one thing that i've never heard of a shop "overlooking"

i think that they typically they can't because that's the one part they have to actually send in - unless they hook it up to a different car

You take it to advanced, and get the code. Then come back here and post the code. We (collectively) can probably tell you what needs to be done to fix it. There are a number of people on here who can fix it for you as well. That process would only take a couple of days.

yeah, they will pull the code, and give you the number. It is a marketing ploy for you to buy parts from them. They give you the code, but you have to figure out the problem from there.

it would probably be cheaper to buy from them as opposed to from a shop, right?

Yes. Nearly any shop will have a minimum mark up of 35% on parts. That isn't all, but a good estimate compared to buying it yourself. O2 sensors are not hard to do, so if that is truely what is wrong, it will be cheaper to not go to a shop.
