So I've put my sig P226 up for sale in the classifieds and I want to get a compact .45. All the kimber compacts are too expensive so I've narrowed it down to a Para Warthog 45 or a springfield 1911 a1 gi compact. thoughts??? 5/11/2006 3:32:44 PM |

I know I have been posting on the other board, but the Springfield XD .40 is one hell of a carry gun.....give it some thought. 5/11/2006 5:25:48 PM |

They just rolled it out in .45 acp as well.
But to answer your question I'd go with Para 5/11/2006 7:27:51 PM |

Have you shot a compact 45ACP yet? If not, you may want to take a test drive.
If I was going to buy one I'd take the Springfield. A double stacked 45 ACP (the Warthog) will have a real fat grip. I'd rather have a fullsize than a double stacked compact, they're almost always easier to conceal. Plus the Springfield should be much cheaper.
The Springfield does have one very shitty aspect...it has the GI sights. Take a look at one before you buy, the front sight is short and skinny and takes a lot away from its practical accuracy.
My real opinion is both guns are crap. Not from a quality standpoint, but because of the configurations. A short fat grip is hard to shoot. A short skinny front sight is hard to shoot.

dude preciate it, I'll make sure to at least get my hands on a double stack compact before I buy, but yeah...the GI sights was one of my main concerns with the springfield
you have any idea about how much it would cost to put a different rear sight on the springfield? 5/11/2006 11:17:29 PM |

i know you can get beretta night sights for less than 100, so id imagine the same
try http://www.trijicon.com
more specifically http://www.trijicon.com/user/parts/parts_new.cfm?categoryID=7#14
more than i though, but trijicon is top of the line...

oh, these are for night sights obviously, more expensive, but if its a carry gun you best get night sights

It would cost more to retrofit aftermarket sights onto the GI slide then it would to buy the regular A1.
On a GI slide you have to mill out the dovetail before you can press in a new rear sight. Also, the new rear sight will be too high for the GI front sight, so you'd have to 1 - pin a new front sight in 2 - mill out a dovetail and press in a nicer front sight5/22/2006 12:42:34 AM |

the parts themselvs would be about $30 for some millet or yost sights that will fit the factory dovetail. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=21448&title=SEMI-AUTO+RETRO+REAR+SIGHT#sku
novak or heine sights will require a good deal of machine time from someone who wont fuck up your slide and a refininsh if its a carbon steel slide. its cheaper to buy as close to what you want as you can. smith time is about $50 an hour, plus parts and most of them are always backlogged.
