My dad has his two desktops and a laptop hooked up to his wireless hub. The two desktops dont seem to have any problems printing on remote printers or transferring files to and from one another.

But the laptop is a different story. I can view the folders that I have marked as "shared" on the same network with the laptop, and i can view from the desktop PCs the folders that I have marked as shared on the laptop. But i cannot view any files, or properties in these folders. Error always comes up with "You may not have permission to view these files or folders."

They are all on "even ground" as far as the router is concerned. all three connect directly to the router, and from there the router goes into his cable modem.

ive tried resetting everything, renaming each computer to distinct names. I've made sure that each computer refers to the others by the correct name, and that all of them are connecting to the same network/domain name
what gives?

There are two parts of Windows file sharing:
-Network Permissions on the folder
-NTFS Permissions on the folder

When you right click on the folder, and go to Sharing Tab, the Permissions button allows specific people to access the files over the network (by default, it's probably has Read Access for Everyeone).

When you right click on the folder, and go to the Security Tab, the list of people who can access the folder is listed. Most likely the only permissions on there are for your current computer, not the computers on the network. To solve this, join everybody to the same workgroup, and then you should be go to Add..., pick the other computers for a location, then add their logins from those computers.

(Of course, this may not be the problem whatsoever ... but it might lead to something that is correct).
