i mean what classifies a dirtbike as a MXC or offroad bike? My dad and i are interested in getting a pair and i was on the honda site just messing around and saw they had theirs broken into those two groups. Is it weight, suspension and stuff? Googled but couldn't find a clear answer, figured you guys could just lay it out straight for me.

an offroad bike is more likely to have electric start and even lights, true motorcross stuff is 125 and 250 CC 2 stroke as well. Offroad bikes come in all sizes, mostly 4 stroke. If it were me I'd have a 230 or 450 honda offroad bike

offroad bikes will be ur 4-stroke bikes with lights(most of the time), larger fuel tanks and softer suspension..and theyre generally heavier

Don't get something that you plan to outgrow quickly. I made it less than a dozen rides on my starter bike before I sold it to get what I really needed, and it cost me ~$500 to have a little bike for 6 months. Definately get a 4-stroke if you plan to do trail riding. 2-strokes aren't happy if you rarely run the throttle wide open. Don't get anything less than a 250. I'm a 5'2" female and have a Yamaha TT-R 230. Although I love my bike, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone much taller than me. If you can flat foot the dirt bike, you need to be looking at something bigger. If you get a regular 250 trail bike, you will probably at some point decide it is too heavy, so if cost is not an issue look for something like a Yamaha WRF 250 instead of the TTR 250 (or other brand equivilants). If you are looking to spend <$2000 a piece just to goof off, a few year old TTR 250 or equivilant is exactly what you want. The Suzuki DRZ 450 is also a great bike and available as a dual sport bike, so that is another good option. I don't have any firsthand experience with anything other than Yamaha, Suzuki, and KTM, but you really can't go wrong with any brand of dirt bike.

Another vote for the DRZ-400. Even in the dual sport version it kicks ass.

I'm riding a KLR-650 these days. Mostly because it was a deal I couldn't refuse. Pretty much a big heavy turd offroad, but it's still a blast...to crash.
