I've never done it, but the kayak place where Falls of the Neuse crosses the river offers 1/2 day and full day trips where you put in there and they pick you up several hours later.
It's probably a ripoff if you have your own gear though. 5/18/2006 2:43:26 PM |

yeh we'd have our own gear and could just drop in anywhere really. my brother did it once for two days and just found a random road that intersected the river and hopped in. hah 5/18/2006 2:46:52 PM |

I've done it but I really couldn't tell you where/how long we went. We also picked a random spot, jumped in and just did our own thing. The water really isn't that bad lol. When you get to where falls of neuse rd is though it gets kind of trashy so its kind of sucky in the camping aspect. but this was also 2 years ago so hopefully someone's cleaned it up by then
and for any reason if you go to the bottom of the river and find a red backpack, could you bring it back to me

I've did it a couple of times. There is a nice place to put in off of Poole Rd. I'd take a fishing pole along, you can catch some decent catfish and the occasional bass as you float. I was surprised though by how shallow the river gets in places....so watch for the channel. 5/18/2006 5:19:21 PM |

actually now that I think of it... I enjoyed it more when we started in knightdale instead of raleigh. didn't hit so many rough/shallow spots... i swear everytime we start in raleigh we always hit that one spot where you literally have to carry the damned thing for a mile. (well 5 ft but same difference). 5/18/2006 7:08:05 PM |

best short run in raleigh is from old milburnie rd to poole rd, there's a long class I rapid through some rock islands just below the confluence with crabtree creek. it is fun to park the boats and explore the rocks there, but watch out for copperheads. i grew up very close to that spot and have done that run many times. make sure that you choose to go after a decent rain, the neuse gets difficult to navigate during dry spells. you can also go from falls lake to buffalo road, but that trip is much longer and more gravelly. you can also put in at cliffs of the neuse. if you don't have your own equipment and don't mind travelling with a group, the neuse river foundation does some trips with equipment provided, for a fee. their website is http://www.neuseriver.org 5/19/2006 12:58:06 AM |

Pick up the Paddlers Guide to Eastern NC at Great Outdoor Provision Co, REI, etc. It'll have all the data you need for a trip like this.
My ladyfriend and I paddled the Mississippi River last summer over 73 days. Give me a holler if you need any help planning this thing out.

Distance from Raleigh to Greensboro is about 80 miles according to google. And that's on I-40.
It takes a good day to do just 20-25 miles in a loaded canoe (and that's with fairly fast moving water and exhausted arms). So use 20miles/day as a good judgement.
