Any experiences-good/bad? I want to increase my sex drive which has been non-existant since I've been on BC...and yes I have tried different types. I was originally put on it to regulate my periods but have been on it non-stop for 7 years, which I've heard from various sources is very bad. Thoughts anyone? 5/20/2006 10:39:04 PM |

i went off birth control for over a year after being on it for about 3 years and i didn't really notice any negative effects but i would just ask your doctor what he/she thinks, or if you don't want to pay for a visit you can visit the student health center and ask a doctor there what they think 5/20/2006 11:40:10 PM |

Actually, being on BC for at least 6 years dramatically decreases your risk for ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer (50% and 60% respectively). As far as sex drive, BC can definately decrease your sex drive. Have you tried yasmin? or have you considered and IUD if you still need BC? IUD is actually one of the most effective BC methods out there (it is actually better than tubal ligation believe it or not!)
Hope that was helpful... ~skip~ 5/21/2006 8:42:37 AM |

I was on bc for about 6 years, and I started having pain during sex, I had no sex drive and things just kinda sucked as far as that goes...but I got off of it...I did it without my doctor's advice, but then went to the doctor a few months later for my regular check up and told her the situation and she said it was probably a good idea and definitely not a bad one (as far as hurting me or anything)...so if you're willing to use condoms, I strongly recommend going off of it to increase sex drive...not to mention bc made me nauseated all the time (especially in the mornings) and that's gone too!
My doctor did give me a couple of prescriptions for the morning after pill to ease my mind if an accident (condom breaks, or something) were to happen...

Depends on what you mean by "better". The effectiveness rates are practically identical - 99.2–99.9% for the IUD, and 99.2–99.9% for sterilization. IMO, that extra 0.03% at the lower end of the range is worth the option of reversal.
And because it always gets brought up wherever IUDs are brought up, there are two types, and one can make you bleed heavier for longer, and the other can make you bleed less for a shorter amount of time. The first is just copper, and the second is hormonal. The first can stay in for 12 years, and the second (called Mirena) can stay in for up to 5. /IUD PSA

I was on it non-stop for 5 years and just got off in March and nothing bad has happened yet *fingers crossed*
You get used to it after so long so you kind of expect your body to fall apart without it. I took it at the exact same time and only missed like one or two pills in my whole 5 years of it. My periods are even exactly the same time as when I was on the pill-- very very regular. You may notice them being heavier without the pill though, but that's all that's changed for me.
good luck 5/21/2006 12:33:53 PM |

as a gal who was once on BC and resulted in lack of sex drive...i feel your pain. i had NO side effects from getting off BC except for maybe bad skin around my period, which i stopped having once on BC, and my period was longer.
i was off BC for a year and had no problems--i got back on in september. experiencing some of the moody side effects again unfortunately but so far so good on keeping the sex drive. i'm switching from ortho-cyclen to Yazz, a new form of yasmin where you take active pill for 24 days versus 21. we'll see how that works. 5/21/2006 6:57:14 PM |

I realize that RachelMarie stated that she didn't want to have babies but it should be mentioned that many women take birth control pills for the simple regulation of hormones. Preventing pregnancy is often not the purpose of taking it.
There are a lot of other benefits- including more regular periods, less severe cramps, control of acne, decreased chance of several cancers, prevention or treatment of noncancerous breast growths, iron deficiency anemia, ovarian cysts, etc. 5/21/2006 8:13:41 PM |

no negative side effects. you'll get your secs drive back. you'll feel normal again. you just have to be consistant and ALWAYS use condoms. ...or have your dog watch. I've noticed that is a bit of a contraceptive itself. HAHAAH 5/22/2006 9:20:10 AM |

I went off BC and lost about 25 lbs, and sex drive was pretty spectacular.... except for the little pregnancy factor. Having to worry about that every time was much more of a mood killer than being on the pill ever took away. So after being on BC for 11 years, I went off... Sex drive was really never a huge issue for me, though after I got off the pill, it still increased pretty dramatically. The reason I was on the pill was originally for regulation reasons as well (I always had horribly long periods). This time around I just took a little more lengthy measures, and has worked out very well. No babies til 2011, and sex drive hasn't at ALL been an issue. Woo Hoo! 5/22/2006 1:07:40 PM |

For my first 2-3 years on the pill I didnt really have a sex drive and couldnt get "physically" turned on, and it was the same time I started having sex so I thought that was normal, I always orgasm but it would just be a slow beginning, extra work for the guy, ya know But now around year four and now year five it's like I constantly want sex! It doesn't stop, I'm always "ready to go" and have a huge sex drive. I've was on OTC and then last summer I switched to OC and do the three month cycle and since then I've been horny. I don't know if in my case it was the bc or I just had to find the right person who constantly turns me on lol I've been thinking abotu switching to the nuva ring... I hope it doesnt change my sex drive cause I like it the way it is, I'm sure my boyfriend does also.
One side affect I do have is constant nausea! I'm not sure if it's exactly from my bc but it's so persistant sometimes it takes a good hour or two to go away and it's usually right at bedtime or in the morning. blah! 5/22/2006 3:27:26 PM |

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner!!! This had more to do with mine than anything, as much as I may not have admitted it at the time.
I was, however, on about 7 different types over the years though, and have to admit that all had some effect, except by some miracle with one specific person..... I'll let you do reason by deduction.5/23/2006 9:59:56 PM |
