I didn't know this, and I searched through the boards and didn't find this posted anywhere, but why is the basketball tournament in Tampa Florida in 2007? Doesn't this decrease the chance of having massive numbers of Big 4 fans attending when those teams could potentially have huge years. I also think that GT could have a huge year. So Atlanta I'd be willing to buy. Who in the state of Florida is expected to contend for the championship?

^ Exactly it's not about what teams bring the most fans but marketing the tournament to different areas to increase exposure to the games and holding them in the larger arenas to do so.

^^Greensboro is where the ACC home office is dumbass.

It is also one of the biggest basketball arenas in the southeast.

Your ST posts are pathetic.

i know the office is there. you say that like thats gonna make me be like "o, ok in that case have it there every year" being in the same town as the office doesnt change the tournament in any way. greensboro is not a city to be hosting major sporting events, im sorry. the arena is very old and the way its built out the seats are not "good seats".

there is nothing there. it should rotate with charlotte atlanta tampa orlando miami boston dc while at the same time expanding its fanbase exposure outside of central nc.

if people from the other schools book a trip to greensboro and they lose the first day they are stuck in nothingness for the rest of the weekend.

The idea of rotating it is not all bad, but it should never be in Boston. That is way far for any team outside of BC to travel and would be a home tournament for BCU.

the reason g'boro is so often a pick (and why charlotte wouldn't be bad either) is that it's right in between the big four schools and there is also an arena and an infrastructure that has proven it can host the acc tourney well.

Yep that's correct. If anyone read the announcement you would know the meeting was held to schedule the tournament for 2011 - 2015 since the other dates where already selected. In that period that tournament will only leave Greensboro once for Atlanta in 2012. Outside of the dome's like the Georgia Dome Greensboro Coliseum holds seats the most people out of the other available arenas in the southeast and that is a BIG deal when you are trying to fit members from all 12 schools in one arena at the same time.

From 2013-2015 the left the option to move the tournament to another location as their need would fit closer to that time, which is smart. In the end it will come down to a location that will be able to better accommodate seating and draw money for the conference.

it should have been rotating every year... Gboro, DC, Atlanta... even Jacksonville would be good locations for it (hell, go even further south in Florida iwth Miami on board)...

holding it in NC every year was just plain stupid

why is it appropriate to rotate it outside the epicenter of the league? How are you maximizing the attendance of Thursday/Friday games when people have to commit an extra day of travel to the tournament itself. I understand that this was decided before this meeting, but I don't understand why we had to move the symbol of the ACC, or what the symbol of the ACC once was, to a location 10 hours away to appease expansionists.

It's just to be fair to the other teams. It will be good for the FSU, Miami, and GT fans.

Just as Boston should never be considered for the tournament because of location, Miami shouldnt either. Jacksonville - ok, Orlando - maybe, but never Miami.

plus in Greensboro that week of the tourney, it's THE ticket in town. The city really rolls out the red carpet for the teams and it garners much of the citys attention. In DC the tourney doesn't create nearly as much local buzz or excitement.

to where? sarasota?

warning: Tampa is definately UF country (and USF of course, but we won 1 conference game last year, so who cares?). the atmosphere will not be there outside of the fans in the arena. the town wont care.

the reg. season championship should mean more anyway.

it means you were good for 16 games, not just 3 or 4.

right, so they should do away with the NCAA tourney then

maybe they can use a bunch of computers and polls to decide who plays for the national title instead

the reason why G'boro, and even Charlotte have been popular choices for holding the tournament is not just b/c of the NC schools. NC is in the middle of the conference geographically. these two locations allow for the most fans to drive to the tournament instead of flying. besides the four NC schools, UMD, UVA, VT, CU, and GT are all within a few hours drive to Charlotte and Greensboro. it's a question of location moreso than how great a city, and venue are. the old Charlotte Coliseum sat 23k, and Greensboro seats what 22-23k? what other appropriate arenas (i.e. not a college teams home) in the ACC region are that large, besides football domes like the Georgia Dome? none. every other NBA arena in the area seats at or under 20k. so let's look at it this way. if an ACC Tournament ticket booklet costs say $500 (i'm not sure the actual number, just throwing out a reasonable number), and you can sell 3,000 more seats with the larger Greensboro Coliseum, that equates to another 1.5 million dollars that the ACC could earn in ticket sales.

^exactly, they might as well just increase the price and have it at a much nicer 20k arena. im sure it will sell out if they have it in staples or anywhere. it just makes it a much better expierience for the players and fans to enjoy a destination city. greensboro over and over again is boring as fuck.

You dumbass, you think ticket revenues are the main consideration for the ACC tournament? Schools are a bit more worried about getting a couple hundred more of their biggest donors into the building.

Quote :

Tampa, DC, etc. were picked long before expansion. They did have a theory about geographic outreach, before they expanded the natural area of the conference and had to slice the pie 12 ways. Now they are more concerned with centrally locating it and having it in an arena with lots of seats than anything else. The new arenas have more boxes instead of more seats. Tampa shocked the hell out of me when it was picked, because that arena is tiny and a dump. There are a number of better options just in Florida.

Also, I think the league is a bit more worried about a place that can best accomodate the ACC tournament, and all of the festivities surrounding it, than enticing people with "other things to do" to get them to show up. The ACC tournament has 11 basketball games in 4 days. They have plenty of ACC-basketball related activities as well (especially if it is in Greensboro). Better nightlife or tourist activities isn't going to attract anyone else to the tournament. Heck, in some cities the ACC tournament barely gets local press coverage.

^^^I can rattle off numbers for venues the ACC tournament is not going to be in.

Nice try, but the 2007 tournement will be in the St. Pete Times Forum (formerly the Ice Palace), which lists a capacity of 20,500 for basketball. That will be smaller for the ACC tournement with press, etc. and significantly smaller than Greensboro. Beyond capacity, the arena is an absolute dump. I've been when it was the Ice Palace, and I don't imagine it has gotten better with age.

Greensboro is the best site, face it. Charlotte and Atlanta are good to put into rotation every few years, but where else do you have a big, decent arena in a neutral site, that is centrally located to the ACC, nowhere, so just deal with the fact that greensboro is it.

BTW, isint the RBC Center getting a first and second round NCAA regional in 07 ?
