I have a jpg that looks fine when viewing as a thumbnail in "My Pictures" but is chopped off when I try to open it in 5 different programs. Any suggestions?

Take screenshots of both so we can see what you're talking about. Also, try rightclicking on the thumbnail using the refresh thumbnail option.

Darkone, If I do that then the thumbnail is now chopped off. I am not sure how screenshots would help, but I can send anyone the picture if they are willing to spend some time one it. My cousin's first child was born a few days ago and somehow all his pics got corrupt. Anyways, I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me.

I don't know how you pictures got messed up. They were probably edited in some way through what ever software you were using to view the pictures. All I can really say is that the pictures didn't change themselves. The fact that the thumbnails didn't match the changed pictures tells me that whatever happened occured recently. Also, unless you have other copies of these pics you probably aren't going to be able to get them back the way they were.

My cousin just sent me the pic. The thumbnail looks fine but the pic is chopped off when it is open. It's not like the thumbnail image is cached on my pc or something.

^^ The thumbnail is cached on your PC. When you got the pics from your cousin and put them on your computer, did they always look fucked up? Did your cousin have fucked up pics? How did you transfer the pics?

How would the "real" image be cached on my computer?

Yes, the pictures always looked fucked up when opening them in a viewer. They always look fine in windows explorer thumbnail view. This goes for any computer they are viewed on, including my cousins. He has some type of card reader he used to get them on his computer. They are no longer showing up on his camera memory card.

Windows caches thumbnails. Therefore, you either got your cousin's thumbnails or your images didn't start out messed up. Are your cousin's copies messed up?

His copies are messed up. They were messed up when I received them, so yes, they started out messed up. I tried saving different formats as earlier suggested, but no luck.

Doesn't windows use a "Thumbs.db" file to store thumbnail info? You can see it by going to Tools->Folder Options->View->Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". I think that is used as a thumbnail cache file so windows doesn't have to re-create the thumbnails every time you access a folder. Maybe it is pulling that cache file from a time when the image was not corrupt.

It does, but how can it cache a good image when it was already corrupted when he sent it to me.

^^ It seems that he's saying that they've always been messed up. When he refreshed the thumbnails, they started showing the messed up pic. What I can't figure out is where the good thumbnails came from. The only explination is that the pictures weren't always messed up.

^same here

How did he send you the pictures? If he sent it in a zip file then the Thumbs.db file could have been picked up. This scenario could happen where the image was fine, Thumbs.db was created, the image became corrupted, and the images got zipped up and sent before Thumbs.db had a chance to update the broken image.

Just a guess.

If it is corrupted then why does the thumbnail look fine?
