Wow..
That website is way over the top. I had neurofeedback performed on me over the course of two months for migraine and fibromylagia problems I've been having for four years. They were really ruining my quality of life - dispite my best efforts to continue having fun and doing things I wanted to do. My doctor mentioned that I should give this a shot, thus I did.
The money investment was $50 dollars each treatment, of which I went 30 times over 2 months and go back once a month now. After $300 dollars I started billing my insurance and they started paying 70% of the costs.
I certainly am not going to say that this does all those 'wonderful' things mentioned on that website, but I have a very noticable decrease in all of my health problems. This was the only thing that changed during that period of time, so there is certainly some circumstantial evidence that it did do something.
After 20 doctors or so completely give up on you after doing many tests and various drug and non-drug therapies and life-style changes to no effect and you try something like this and it has a dramatic effect...
This was done on me by a 'real' doctor though that works at the Hopkin's Pain Clinic and does this on the side because he has done research into it and believes it works. Probably more qualified than the people running that site. 5/23/2006 12:42:20 PM |

Yeah I looked over more of that website. Completely different presentation of the material than what was given to me by my Doctor at Hopkins.
He constantly downplayed the possible effects it might have, made sure I was comfortable spending money on it, etc etc..
For anyone curious the process is something like this:
Hook up various sensors to you to measure brain-wave patterns, etc. The doctor reading it then determines any abnormalities from clinical norms while you play various games.
Once that is done (first two visits), you play Pac-Man (quite literally) by thinking and using a directional pad much like the real Pac-Man. It's quite hard at first.. basically he sets things up so that unless your brain patterns are in a certain range of those clinical norms then Pac-Man doesn't move forward.
There's no real 'trick' to getting him to move.. he just moves sometimes and eventually you start to be able to get him to move more and more.
Yes it sounds retarded. No I wouldn't have ever done this unless it was presented to me as a viable option by several Medical Doctors whom I trust. I probably wouldn't have done it unless it was covered by insurance either. 5/23/2006 12:55:05 PM |

neurofeedback can be very dangerous - you run the risk of basically reprogramming (reconditioning) fundamental behaviors that can be critical to life (accelerated/decelerated heartrate, breathing, etc)
its not a toy.
its best not to develop an ability to control your own heart rate. I doubt you'll do a better job than millions of years of natural selection.
On the other hand, it can be very useful - like any medical tool, of course. 5/25/2006 10:40:53 PM |
