I have been looking at the LG LRM-519 lately. It runs around $350, but no subscription fees.

I've been looking at it for a while now. I'd like to try it out personally, but here's my qualms. It only has an NTSC (not ATSC) tuner. If it had a digital tuner (w/ HD support), then I'd be all over it. In a couple of years when all the analog signals are cut off, and everyone has digital cable... it'll be a brick. In the meantime, pretty sweet. I just have a feeling LG (lucky goldstar BTW) is about to release another DVR to replace the 519.

Some of the great things about the 519 are
1) External hdd support through USB
2) No subscriptions anymore
3) Transfer content over network
4) Dual layer dvd recorder

I don't think it has dual tuner support though(??)

I don't think is has a dual tuner. I understand what you mean... someone has to release a DVR that supports ATSC/HDTV soon enough. I suppose I will hold off until then. But I can't see myself bending over for a $17/month fee from tivo so I was looking at these alternatives.

Time warner has $7/month for the HD DVR. You can't find anything that can possibly compete with that as far as I know. You can spend a shitload more for better quality, but it's not very proportional.

its more than that. i know the regular DVR box is an extra $14 per month, and the HD is a few bucks more than that.
now if you already have a cable box, or have a normal cable box provided as part of a package, then maybe its a $7 extra to get the HD DVR box.

but to go from no box to a HD DVR box is more then $7 per month

the only way to get something that records hd, has expansion capabilities, a burner, etc all without a monthly fee, is to build your own.

I am tired of paying for digital cable (dont watch any of the channels, but would like a DVR)
I want to be able to burn the shows in my DVR to DVD without capturing them to the PC.

If you were me would you buy that?

if you call tivo and tell them you are cancelling due to your cable company providing dvr they will ask you to keep the subscription and only pay $7 a month, to match the cable companies price.

Tivo basic is available on toshiba and pioneer dvr/dvd-r's. What other NON-TiVo DVR's are out there? And does anyone have any experience with them?

I've had good luck with Dish Network's 100-hour DVR. It's was programmed by some Korean retards when we got it, but they keep automatically flashing the code and it gets better with each revision.

It doesn't make that annoying Tivo sound either.

^You can only schedule recordings for 3 days out and you can't schedule a "season pass" meaning tell it to record all the episodes of one show every week.

So what are the options for a guy that thinks it'll be cool to pause live TV and record shows intelligently but doesn't want to pay hundreds of dollars for a glorified VCR?

I have a high end ATI card and it has DVR software. Its a pain in the ass to operate.

I would rather have the DVR a seperate unit hooked to the TV. If I ever get a tv with a DVI input I am going to get/build an XP media center PC and hook to it.

I actually have a DVICO Fusion 5 card which does HDTV off of cable. So I have a device capable of doing most of this stuff... problem is that sometimes it records right, sometimes it doesn't. I suppose messing with it more will fix it, but my main problem with that is that when the recorder or tv card are running... my CPU doesn't want to do too much else (beware most TV tuner cards are CPU intensive).

I think I will wait for something similar to the LG or toshiba to come out capable of recordings/messing with HDTV
