Then the guy commensed to insult me when i told him i didnt want to sell it to them or trade in for something else. So I told him i dont need to be insulted by some dipshit who does a shitty job selling cars at carmax, and barely speaks english

new cars they will offer almost a reasonable amount for. If your car is older, don't even bother.

I have a buddy who is a buyer for carmax. My understanding is if your car is eligible for them to resell, then they will give you what they might pay at an auction for it. If not, they will give you what they think it will get at auction minus transportation etc. Of course the arent interested in buying a car where they cant make some kind of profit, who would be?

They offered my girlfriend $300 for her old Mitsubitchy. I sold it through Craigslist for $3800.

But,

Some guy on the THSCC forums tried to sell his Neon for a long time. Took it there and got a much higher offer than what he had been adveritising. I think he got $500 or $1000 more iirc.

Just depends on the vehicle. If they are going to just send it to auction of course they are going to lowball you. They won't get shit for it at auction though and they have to transfer the title and transport the damn thing. They aren't going to do that if they can't make some money off you.

Carmax sucks anyway. When we were trying to figure out what car we wanted to buy we went there to test drive a few cars. When we told the sales guy that we weren't going to buy for another month or so he asked us to leave and come back during the middleof the week when it wasn't as busy. I mean damn we WERE going to buy a car from there but now NEVER.

The nationwide chain of Carmax dealers sucks because you got one impatient salesperson?

If the right car came along I'd just buy it from one of his co-workers and then rub it in his face that he lost a commission by being a dick.

I'm pretty sure they don't make % commisions at Carmax. They don't look at themselves like a dealership they like to think they are a "store".

No. They sucked before we went in, now they're completely off the list because of one salesperson. I've also X'ed several other dealerships in charlotte because of dickhead salepeople. I don't put up with morons nor do I support corporations that employ them. I also will not buy from sears to where they have to deliver to my house. I gave them 2 chances and they screwed both of them up. Queen City TV & Appliance is where it's at, very happy with them and also very happy with Modern Nissan of Concord.

when I was trading in my explorer we went there first, they gave the lowest trade in offer of any of the dealerships that we went to. In all we traded it and they gave us 1500 more than what carmax gave us, essentially paying off the trade. I found out that if you get to a base price on what you are looking for without working in the trade, then after it's in writing ask what your trade is worth.. I got about 1200 more for my trade than what they first offered me, based on a 'deal or no deal' ideal. I basically had the bottom price, knew what I was going to put down, and then told them they had to pay off my trade for the deal to be done. They wanted the sale so they did. me 1, carmax 0

try http://www.autotrader.com

I was told by a car dealer when I bought my current car (don't know how right he was or if he was just disparaging CarMax) that at CarMax, they charge about the same prices as any used car dealers except that almost all the cars have pretty high mileage.

Try a mom & pop place out in Pittsboro or Sanford - they usually don't screw you over, and will give you good trade it.

When I was going to trade in my 03 Eclipse GT at the same dealer I bought it from, they only wanted to give me $9,000 for it when we had paid $13,500 less than a year before, and it only had maybe an extra 20,000. When I went to another dealer, where I did end up trading in my Eclipse and purchasing a different car, they gave us $11,500

When I bought my car at carmax it had 47k on the odometer and I paid slightly more for it however within 3 weeks of owning it I had a $1700 seat replaced under the unlimited warranty, and just a month ago I had a very expensive part replaced under the extended warranty. All in all I'm happy.
