anybody ever done it?
its another thing I'm considering after graduation

Quote :
"The Hunan Province of China is seeking English Teachers in many of their schools. Most of the schools that we are working with provide the following benefits: 1. Salary: USD 500/month. 2. Free accommodations including all utilities
(phone/electric), individual apartment includes TV, Internet, kitchen, bathroom etc. Maybe the food is not included. But food here is very cheap, 3. The school will pay round trip airfare if the contract is 10 months long (US or other countries to China and return), 4. USD 10/month phone reimbursement maximum, 5. USD 10/month utility reimbursement maximum, 6. Free medical coverage, 7. The school will arrange visa. Passport acquisition must be done by applicants, 8. One month paid vacation with extra USD 300 allowance for traveling during winter vacation (Chinese lunar New Year), 9. Paid holidays for all US and Chinese national holidays. Most schools require 10 month contracts. The above information may vary a little but not much depending on schools. Living expenses here are very low compared with the States especially with almost all of the major expenses paid by schools. Teaching material can not be provided but chances are you would be teaching spoken English. "

My friend's brother does that in Japan. Seems to like it. You don't even have to speak japanese/chinese (Not sure why but he didn't speak it at all when he moved). His apartment is tinnnny though.

That's because they eat ANYTHING that moves. From what my friend that lives in China says, you don't ask what you're being served. You don't want to know. Hell, half the time the waiters don't know what it is.

I think I'll stick with eating identifiable meats and veggies, and fish that have been filleted.

I'm aware of the cuisine

my father has travelled extensively in China

I'm wanting to know about teaching there

and $500/month isn't so bad considering that the housing is covered... plus airfare is covered
its more about the experience than it is the money

I wouldn't need to know Chinese necessarily because I'm assuming I'd be teaching conversational English to older students who already speak some English

^Yeah I was about to say that they censor their internet over there. But don't you think it would be a little difficult to just do ordinary day things in a country where you don't speak a bit of the language? I'm sure you would start to pick it up after a few weeks but those first few would be pretty difficult.

My friend is in Beijing now studying abroad. She was offered a job teaching English while working out at some gym there. It paid what equates to $19/hr. Then you have to consider that the cost of living in Beijing is much lower. So it's pretty good money and you don't have to know Chinese to teach English for most of these jobs. These children learn English growing up sort of like we do.

I know a lot of people who have done it in Japan and loved it, as for China....errr, no?

Wait, that seems crappy as hell. I'm fairly certain the Japanese jobs are sweeter than that. And it may be cheap to leave there, but I'm pretty sure traveling in China is a bitch and expensive.

I'm really interested in doing something like this for a year as well. Either in Japan or China. If anyone has any experience, additional info it would really help me out.

Looking at that teachabroad.com site, there are teaching jobs in Japan which subsidize your furnished apartment and pay $2,200 a month. They also buy you a plane ticket home upon completion. Sounds like a good deal.

A language is either tonal or not, there is no more or less. Unless you are referring to the number of tones a given language has. Which you can't be because the language of Mongolia, is not a tonal language.

But it's not the tones of any Sino language that give people a problem in speaking english anyway, rather the use of unaspirated voiceless retroflex affricate, palatal africtives, etc... that don't exist in english.
