I'm trying to hook up 2 computers for use on my RR at home. I have a Netgear RT314 router that I'm trying to configure but NEITHER of my computer can connect to the internet when I have it all connected, both receive active packets (or something) and they both get IP's like 192.168.0.2 (0.3, etc) I can connect to the router when this is hooked up and I've configured it, but it still doesnt work.

So help would be appreciated, point me to old threads I missed, whatever.

Roadrunner is a bitch. Why? They bind MAC addresses to the router, so only one PC can connect, which is the first one it's connected to.

Just go into your router and clone the MAC off of the PC used to set it up. Should work for you after that.

time warner does nothing of the sort. their docsis system only deals with the mac of the modem.

It's just a feature that they turn on in the router. You can change the MAC again, but you have to call them. Not really that annoying, but pretty lame of them not to let you admin your own equipment, I think.

Time warner doesn't bind to your nic's mac card at all. Ask any tech rep. Now I don't know about Time warner's business class stuff.

There's something funky with your router. With any standard in the home router you should connect the cable box to the router and the computers to the router then follow the instructions. Some OLDER routers did not auto detect the type of cable used from the Cable Box to the router. Even some of the newer modems TW uses does this. So 99% change of not needing a special cable.

If you're still having trouble go into the instructions and reset the router. Then follow the instructions again. The netgear's I've worked with were setup so fast and easy. Newer Linksys you push one button and you're done lol.

i know they do in charlotte and i remember them doing it here

you have to just unplug your modem for a few minutes and then plug it back in i think and it'll take whatever new MAC it's connected to

that makes absolutely no sense. i've setup at least 75 networks on road runner and not once did i have to clone ips. you can add computers at will and it works great...you dont have to call RR everytime you change routers/comptuers, that would be pretty stupid.


DamnStraight, i would do a hard reset on your router (google: "hard reset" + "whatever your router model # is) which usually involves holding down the reset button for 30 secs or something like that. you could also update the firmware on it (but u might need to hard reset first). after that/those steps you should be able to plug shit in and have it work.

So is this a router provided by time warner? If so, then you're paying that stupid "home networking" fee on your monthly bill and should just get your own router. For the 40 bucks a good router would cost you, you'll save a lot more in the end.

With that being said, it's probably nothing time warner did that's preventing you from using two computers at once. Do what synapse suggested and also try unplugging the modem and router and plugging them all back in again so everything resets. If none of that works, then it may be time to get a new router.

Just to clarify, are you haveing ANY problems when it's just one computer at a time connected?
