Seriously. Linux is an OPERATING SYSTEM. Firefox is a web browser. One does not equal the other. Firefox is available on Windows as well, and OS X. I guess everyone should just go kill themselves then.

about:config
app.update.mode = 0
app.update.silent = true

I'm not going to argue which software is better/wose than the other. I like the fact my software can update if a 0-day exploit comes out.

Haha, read pc world's top 25 worst products of all time. IE 6 made it in at number 8 while mozilla made their list of the top 100 best products at number 12.

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,125706,pg,3,00.asp

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,125772,pg,3,00.asp

Now I don't hate IE as a browser, but the only times I've ever had malicious software install on my system was while using IE 6. Sure firefox has holes too, but you do get the undergod advantage in terms of not actually being an exploit target.

^^ it's a pretty neat article, and a lot of stuff on the top 25 is kind of like a trip back in time, as the top 25 worst is "of all time" and includes stuff like the pc jr.

If you want to attack every news outlet that pans IE then you're going to have to come up with jibes for the New york times and US Emergency Readiness team too...

So everyone who doesn't like IE is a macfag, government employee, or stuck in the 90's eh? CNET also lambasted microsoft for IE 6, are they gay too? Zdnet editorials have also attacked IE 6 and recomended firefox. They must be macfags or attatched to the government right? Some arstechnica editorials have also suggested using firefox over IE, so they're automatically fags as well I guess.

I mean I use IE for some things and it's not really a hate-worthy browser, but damn you guys are fucked up.

It's just stupid to say that IE is one of the worst products of all time, considering it and it's predecessors pretty much single handedly responsible for allowing the Internet to grow as it did.

But hating on MS is such the cool thing to do these days, that everyone just hops onto it.

Netscape 4.7 was far and away a worse browser than IE years after it was released and stayed around longer, but since no one remembers those days it gets no hate.

IE "6" was mentioned as one of the worse products of all time most notably because of the security flaws involved with such things as active-x. They conceded it was a good browser though, but the sheer number of viruses, spyware, and other malware that proliferated using flaws in that browser are hard to deny. If you're going to attribute the growth of the internet to its predecessors then it'd be equally fair to attribute the proliferation of spyware and viruses that have followed to IE 6. Of course, both attributions are bullshit.

Yes, needless hatered of IE is dumb although sometimes it's rooted in bad experiences related to IE security flaws, but indefensible fanaticism for IE is just bizzare.

I like IE6 b/c there are no viable alternatives.

firefox is slow and buggy.
opera is junk.
lolnetscape.

it irks me that people flog IE6 as being so insecure even though when fully patched it runs better than firefox.

people who use firefox b/c they are uncapable of using IE properly are the ones that annoy me.

if you like tabs and extensions thats fine. But the security issue is dumb.

If it hadn't been for IE coming through to knock off Netscape, there would be about 3 webdevelopers in the entire world, because the rest of us would have put our heads through walls long ago.

I just find it silly to be harping on IE6 (I know you, personally, aren't -- don't get me wrong) as one of the worst products ever when there are a million worse products out there that had absolutely no benefit whatsoever to the advancement of the Internet at all.

Gator is noticeably absent from the list, for example.

I'd argue the proliferation of spyware and viruses is more due to the fact that people think it's really sweet to be able to have a half-naked chick dance in the corner of their monitor or get a wicked awesome background for IE instead of the normal chrome.

IE6 is pretty damn slick with its shell integration. I really really like that feature. I don't like it enough to use it over opera though

Trusting anything Ziff Davis, ZDNET and its associated moronic publications say as "knowledgable computer reporting" is really dumb.

CNET just regurgitates the shit they steal from blogs, and haven't done any real journalism in the history of the organization that I am aware of.

PC World doesn't have a single writer or editor on staff who has a clue about ACTUAL technology. They are all damn journalists and writing monkeys apparently. Ever read any of their "reviews" or "shootouts"? They do amazingly well to publish a monthly magazine with no pertinent information in it.

For fuck's sake man, they put Photoshop Elements as the 11th best product of the year? And CRAIGSLIST AS #3??? YOUTUBE AS #9???

They are the journalistic equivalent of a myspace group.

Haha, almost every peice of software has critical security flaws of some sort. The questions really are how many and are you really at risk because of them. I just think it's pretty hard to deny that IE 6 opened up a lot of people to fairly major and real security threats. I mean sure, if you ran windows update religiously and made sure autoupdate actually ran then you were safe from most of those threats, but with firefox or opera you've never had to be that disciplined about updates. Are you really saying that's acceptable?

I didn't think that was really in doubt, it was just the most recent and readily availible article (of many) that flamed IE for being a sercurity risk. Since we know all the IE fans out there are obviously more intelligent and capable than security analysts and journalists at sites from arstechnica to ZDnet though, it really doesn't matter WHICH article we're talking about.

Arstechnica has nearly as many articles about Firefox security holes and bugs as it does IE (if not as many or more). You also don't see Ars making stupid as shit worthless articles like "top 100 of 2005".

I don't even particularly like IE, but it's not horrible by any stretch of the imagination. Most browser virus exploits now will get your ass just as badly in Firefox as IE. I'll be glad to link you to plenty of sites that will fuck your shit up just as badly.

This is just a pissing contest once again.

The reason IE helped grow the internet the way it did, is because it is intergrated into the fucking operating system!!! People use whats there. A great many people don't think about security, unless spyware or a virus wipes their files or inhibits their computing in some other way. All people see is an icon that says "Launch to browse files on the web" or whatever the fuck IE says when you mouse over the icon, and they click it.

What if I don't feel like wasting time "patching" IE? The only time I "patch" Opera is when I upgrade it to a new version. I'm tired of people hating on Opera. FF you have legit points with as it is slow and bloated. But Opera kicks ass, end of story. The only good thing about IE is its speed, and it is only slightly faster than Opera IME.

Opera: So awesome that it reports, by default, as IE!

Which, as a side note, causes a whole slew of JS fuckery.

adding avant browser to IE has noticeably increased its speed on my machine

the only hate i have for IE is that it's a microsoft product...best thing about IE is that if i get lazy, my sub-par coding will be rendered just how i want it to be

firefox could stand some work, but i think it's a great browser overall (essentially includes all the "extras" avant browser offers as part of the basic programming)...i also like that you can install a multitude of plugins

never used opera

I'll second that. It has also helped the stability and made IE not suck. If IE came out with all the features of avant then the world would be a better place.
