ESPN keeps cutting into PTI with coverage of Michelle Wie trying to qualify for the U.S. Open.

It seems the world is incredibly desperate to see a woman compete against men and win. (Billie Jean King, Wie, Annika Sorenstam for awhile, Danica Patrick).

Assume for a second Wie starts making a habit of this and being in men's tournaments. Although interest in it now isn't very high, would that mean even less interest and coverage would go to the LPGA? Would he have a situation similar to when the best black players were allowed to play in the majors the Negro Leagues would disappear?

'minority' leagues, if you will, will always be second to 'majority' leagues

not because people dislike women or black people but because, as a whole, the competition is inferior

yes...

I'm asking if the minority league "disappears" in this case.

I know. But when she's no longer a teenager she'll be awesome and even better than she is now if she doesn't burn out.

It's just that she's not made a single cut in a U.S. men's event (and only made one in South Korea or somewhere), and she gets more attention than the recognized-best LPGA golfer, Annika Sorenstam. And there's a media perception (which in today's sports = money) that she is better because she takes on the men willingly, while Annika did once and then proclaimed lack of interest for not wanting to do it again.

Sure, it's a gimmick. But gimmicks are ratings and tickets sold. 2000 people followed her along today.

if there was a 16 year old male out there he'd get just as much attention

until he never makes a cut and everyone realized he sucks compares to his competetion

which is going to happen eventually with wie

she has no real interest in the LPGA her game is being tailored for the PGA, she has a horrible short game but she can crush the ball. Nike is banking on her competing in the PGA (its not MPGA although it is historically a Men's tour)

Wie will never make it. She lacks the penis necessary to reach her fullest potential. It also serves as a counter weight for more balanced shots off the tee.

OTL doesn't need to be a nightly show

But she'd probably be the topic even if it were still weekly

Just keep shoving her down our throats, ESPN

i think its pretty obvious women will never be able to truely compete with men when it comes to certain sports

gg ESPN on being dumb asses and trying to stir shit up all the time

ESPN is slowly becoming the same tripe that MTV became years ago. Remember when it was all music videos? ESPN's doing the same thing. Original movies, original series, a reality show, plus lame shit like mock press conferences during sportscenter.

It's less about sports and more about appealing to the widest audience they can, whether they lose respectability or not. Plus the pressure to be more PC makes me sick. They generate undeserved hype that Michelle Wie and Annika Sorenstam receive as if they'll ever really compete in a men's tournament. Danica Patrick may well compete with men one day. But she's driving a car, not swinging a golf club.

And I'm not against women in sports. Robin Roberts used to be a sportscenter anchor and she was great. But don't give positions to women just to make yourselves look good. Suzy Kolver and Andrew Kremer aren't fit to lick the sweat off my ballz.

Actually, Suzy Kolber knows more about football than any user on this site, myself included.

She wrote an essay describing "trap" plays on her job application.

She would completely undress you in any football conversation.

does suzy kolber know how to take a hit from a 275 pound linebacker

btw John Fox is on this site, he knows more about football than Kolber and more about martial arts than Chuck Norris
