I bet I've not even reached 50 burnt DVDs on this drive and now it's a worthless piece of shit. it's claiming a servo error has occurred, which I don't think would be fixable. guess I'll be buying a drive in the future.

I thought plextor was a reputable company, but apparently that's not the case anymore.

because you happened to have an error it makes the company not reputable anymore?

I've owned 5 plextor drives over the years, they all burned out, but LONG after the duty cycle was exceeded (my first one, a scsi 8x cdr drive, lasted nearly 10,000 burns).

I'd call their support anyway to see what, if anything they can do about it.

no, they're not reputable because every review site I read online for this model had the exact same fucking thing happen to everyone that bought it. look for model PX-716UF and find out for yourself.

and yes, 1 year warranty. I guarantee this will be the last piece of shit plextor I ever buy.

no, but an external 5.25 enclosure is like 25 bucks.

And that sucks dude, smells of class action lawsuit to me (based just on what you said, because im too lazy to go look it up)

it would be a class action lawsuit only if someone with some money bought one. I can't think of any corporations that make a habit out of buying external drives, and they're usually the only people that work on stuff like that.

I'll probably end up going into it this weekend and doing a little bit of testing on it. it might be nothing more than the lens being out of adjustment, and being a USB/firewire device will make it a lot easier to do diagnostic work on.

^^not true at all. (the class action). You just need to find a few hundred people with the same documented problem to get it going

i used my last lite-on dvd 16x burner once, MAYBE twice in less than a years use and it crapped out on me (the dvd laser fucked up at some point, the cd laser worked fine). lite-on is generally good, but i got screwed. i further screwed myself by waiting to do anything about it until the warranty ran out

Yeah noen's right, if the lawyers can find enough people to make their cut worth it, then someone will go after it. They just need there to be enough tiny pitance damage checks for people like you for their cut to add up to something big. I mean if 5000 people got 100 dollar damage checks, they could clear what 100,000 bucks in fees or so right?
