I'm broke and about to be sent to training for my job for four weeks(2 in June, 2 in July) I'll get a nice bonus in July after completing the training and most all my meals are free and my stay is free. Unfortunately, being out of town for four weeks means making rent will be nearly impossible. I'll be golden after the training but what can I do now? Loan? Credit card? What can I do? 6/6/2006 12:05:06 AM |

depends on your credit history and your bank
if you have a credit card just take a cash advance, but don't use the card for more purchases and pay it off the next period

I need money this week. I have a GREAT part-time job that supports me, assuming I can work more than 2 weeks out of the month, and the problem is that this great job is sending me to training. I will not be able to work because I will be in Richmond or Indianapolis. I need a loan or a credit card or something.
I have internet and the basic cable. I have a cell phone but it is the only bill my mom pays for. No land line...no real other bills....nothing to pawn except like...necessary furniture. 6/6/2006 12:18:48 AM |

Ooooh, be careful with the cash advance, very careful. I have an NCSU Visa through Chase and I took my $300 cash advance limit out at an ATM to pay for my ValPark fee (assholes only take cash or check) and now it's growing interest and that was in November and I owe like $72 on it now, and it's the last thing on your credit card to be paid off, said the man on the phone. 6/6/2006 12:19:39 AM |

I know my bank does cash advances (with a small fee) if you have a job. Since it seems you dont have a credit card and wouldnt be able to get one in time you may want to look into this option. 6/6/2006 12:20:54 AM |

its probably your best option anyway. better to not get stuck behind a bunch of interest you'll struggle to dig yourself out of. then try to save up some money (slowly, every little at a time counts) to help with stuff like this in the future.

true...but my dad wants me to get a fulltime job and borrowing money doesn't exactly justify waiting around for this part-time job to turn full-time. Maybe the fact that I am the top pick and they are sending me to training will boost his morale.

you will not be able to get a loan to pay rent
no bank in america would front you money for that
a high interest cash advance will work but you should only do that if you are very very desperate - you should be able to live off of a credit card pretty easily for a month - and most people get one with 1yr 0% interest very very easy
i'd vote credit card + cash from selling a few things
you more than likely won't get the credit card within 1 week though - should have planned aheda 6/6/2006 11:30:16 AM |

maybe i missed something - but it appeared to me that she's basically jobless right now - has no way of obtaining income - no paystub to show anyone to get a paycheck advance - unless POSSIBLY someone would take her offer letter as intent to receive income but i highly doubt it (you can use an offer letter to sign a lease somewhere instead of a paycheck - but not with advances/loans i thought) 6/6/2006 11:54:22 AM |

My job IS paying me for training..in July when I complete all 4 weeks.
I am also getting paid $450 for my focus group and $100 for a promo I worked last week. I had some unexpected expenses around the beginning of May and now I am struggling.
I am always broke because I completely support myself (except for my cell phone) I am always broke because until 2 weeks ago, I was working full-time at my internship and not getting paid. It prevented me from getting a daytime job to go along with my night job. I did received class credit but had to continue the internship a month after I graduated because I was verbally bound.
I am not a hustler. I am just trying to find something to tide me over until my money comes in. I clean houses and I am trying to sell some extra stuff I have around here to make moving easier and to use when I leave for training Sunday. I don't see how that makes hustling count for 80% of my posts.

I have a job...that job is sending me away for 4 weeks...for those 4 weeks, I will not be able to work. I will not be obtaining income to pay July's rent. The bonus I will be paid for the training will come at the end of July.

So you worked for free? I would have quit showing up - tell them you are taking a 'day without pay'. Once you have the course credit tell them to kiss your ass or start paying you.
Why won't you let your parents help you (with more than the cell phone)? If they won't help you borrow money from a friend - just be sure you can pay them back.6/6/2006 1:26:11 PM |

I loved the place I was interning. I felt really connected to the whole company and I have 5 great references now. I also built up a wonderful portfolio working for them that will be of great help for the future. I did work for free and it was difficult and although it didn't pay me, I feel like it will help me later on.
When I signed up with them, I promised to stay through May 20th. I ended up there an extra week because they needed me.
I don't like having my parents help me because I feel like they have enough on their minds I don't like to burden anyone.6/6/2006 1:50:35 PM |

I'm interested in the parent aspect of this. What's the deal, folks can't pony up the cash or do you have one of these "I am going to show them" mentalities preventing you from asking them? I wish I could pm everyone the deal that is going on with my parents so they could understand but that's not really possible. The deal is, my dad isn't in good health. In and out of the hospital. He has a double lung transplant in September and I know he has money saved up but it's more about stressing him out. I don't like for him to have to worry for me because he already has enough o worry about. And my mom just doesn't have it. She moved to the beach after my stepfather passed away and is trying to move back. She can't cosign for me. I'd just rather not have my parents be stressed out over me when they already have so much on their plates.6/6/2006 2:14:06 PM |

must have missed the getting paid too late part - if you are going to have the money within 30 days - cash advance is your best bet at this point
the bank account comment was on the fact that they are all bank accounts - i would have to guess you meant 2 checking accounts and 1 savings account - to have them all 3 at different banks probably isn't a best practice - especially if you are hurting for money6/6/2006 2:18:19 PM |

^Yeah, I don't like them being at three seperate banks. I originally opened my Wachovia account to have a place to cash checks here and kept LSB for cashing checks at home and because my mom's best friend works there and does phone transfers for us whenever we need them. The savings account I've had since high school and just have it open with $25 bucks sitting in it. 6/6/2006 2:31:00 PM |

The answer to your question is:
Go to your bank, get overdraft protection AKA Personal Credit Line, and float it till you get paid. As long as you have a good history with your bank, you can generally get overdraft protection up to about 2500 bucks in about 10 minutes.
Generally most banks will charge you a 3-10 dollar finance charge for dipping into overdraft, but it's WELL worth it.
People who use Cash Advances on their credit cards, or god forbid a fucking Paycheck Advance Service (which are all shut down now in NC anyway) are absolute fucking idiots.

Nice guys finish last. Had you told them you couldn't work the final week because you needed money - maybe just maybe they would have paid you. I was paid and paid well for all my internships in college.
Wouldn't it put your dad's mind at ease to know that $500 really helped out his daughter - so she isn't having to clean houses and sell stuff to make rent? You can pay him back on 7/14 right?
Is the point of this thread to start a pawprint rent fund? Setup the paypal account, I can send a couple $'s your way.

No, it would be bailing out his irresponsible daughter. Never borrow money from your family unless it's life or death.
And in business, ethical people finish first. That extra week could very well pay off years down the road. Never burn bridges and build as many as you can. 6/6/2006 2:48:11 PM |
