so i've been having this problem on and off for the past week. when i first start the computer and start the game it gives me 90fps and then once i connect to a server it gives me <=30fps which is bullshit for a 7600gt.

i have a theory that i'm not quite sure about but it has to do with the dual core processor. when i start the game up, i'm supposed to set the affinity to only one processor so the framerate is correctly reported so i do that. but still i get the low fps and can actually see the mouse jerking along when i move it. my theory is that it has to do with the cool n quiet software for the processor but again, i have no real facts to base this off - just the experience that after i played for a little bit and kept the PC on for a few days, whenever i opened it to play again, it was fine.

but that idea is way out there - any other suggestions? i've checked to see if any other processes are eating up RAM or CPU but they're not - the game uses 50% (basically one core) and system idle process uses like 43-47% depending on the other apps running.

i've tried the latest detonator drivers (right now i'm running the latest zer0point mod and it gave me the right framerate before this last reboot), running single monitor instead of dual (although the times when i got the right framerate i was playing with dual enabled), and enabling my pagefile again (had it disabled because i didn't really need it with all this RAM). nothing's worked. any ideas?

what game?

try disabling the software you think might be causing it to mess up...or have you tried this already?

i haven't tried uninstalling that AMD cool n quiet software that came with the motherboard because it seems legit. i'll try it when i get back home though.

disable the cool and quiet feature in the BIOS (I think you disable it there, not through software), that way the processor can run at full speed all the time

(dont hold me accountable for the accuracy of that suggestion)

Never use cool and quite on a gaming system. Check the video settings of the game and make sure the frame rates aren't being capped.

i figured it out - it was the sound card. i was using my PCI turtle beach santa cruz

when i switched to the onboard sound card, which sucks by the way, my framerate went up, but now i can't hear people across the map but whatever

what are some nice USB headsets with good sound cards built in to them that you can configure to your hearing - like the santa cruz had a nice headphone tweaking utility that let me choose where i heard the sound best (i.e. top corner, above me, below me, etc.) and that tweaked how it output sounds to my headphones making in-game hearing a lot better

almost any card with D3D support should be able to do that.

move the soundcard to another PCI slot and disable the onboard sound to free up IRQ's and it should fix the problem.

^^ Spend a little bit of money and get an Audigy, they're worth it.
