Quote : | "Rob Zombie to direct new "Halloween" film POSTED ON 06/05/06 AT 10:30 P.M. BY ETHAN AAMES
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Rob Zombie has been brought in to helm a new "Halloween" film that will kickstart a whole new vision for the franchise and will neither be linked as a sequel to the other films, nor will it be a remake of the 1978 original by John Carpenter.
The movie is being planned for an October 2007 release. Disney's Miramax Films will co-finance the development with former Miramax chiefs Bob and Harvey Weinstein's Dimension Films.
"The look and the feel is going to be completely different," Zombie said in an interview. "'Halloween' started off as a very terrifying concept, a terrifying movie. But over the years, Michael Myers has become a friendly Halloween mask. When it came to the point where you could buy a Michael Myers doll that was cute-looking and press its stomach and play the 'Halloween' theme, you knew the scare factor was gone.
"But I think the story and the situation is scary. All it needed was someone to come in and to take a totally different approach to make it scary again. To me, that's the challenge and that's the fun."
Zombie says that the film will not follow the storyline of the previous films, including the last "Halloween" sequel, "Halloween: Resurrection" in 2002.
"Everything that has come before does not figure into this one," Zombie said. "That series is done."
And while Zombie aims to keep the scares and the character more real, the mask will remain.
"That's an iconic image that can't go away," he said.
Zombie is a fan of the original and said he sought Carpenter's blessing.
"He said, 'That's awesome, go for it,"' Zombie said. "He was very supportive, which I thought was very important. I feel like 'Halloween' is his baby, and I wanted to be very respectful."

sounds interesting, i'm a bit skeptical of the whole "pretend halloween doesn't exist" approach, but i suppose it could be a good thing

If he's going to ignore the whole backstory, then is it still Michael Myers? I understand ditching H2O (whatever it was called) and Resurrection, but is he ignoring the original as well? 6/6/2006 9:19:01 PM |

Well he is keeping the face mask, so I would assume the villain will be Michael Myers. After all it wouldn't be Halloween without Michael Myers. Yes I am aware that Halloween III didn't have him in it, but let's face it, that was like the Rocky V of Halloween movies. 6/7/2006 9:20:16 AM |

Because House of 1000 Corpses is totally on the same level as Halloween. Except it really isn't even a little bit.
I hate Rob Zombie. He should go back to doing shitty Dr. Satan movies and stay away from the classics.
Then again, they're ruining all the other horror franchises with preqels and remakes, so it's not like getting someone else to do this would make it any better.6/7/2006 11:39:22 AM |

ruin is such a harshly misplaced term, i don't see why everyone says it so much. or maybe i just don't understand it. 6/7/2006 6:27:41 PM |

i liked house of 1000 corpses better for sheer wtf factor, but it wasnt a bad film. i hadnt had a good horror laugh in a while and the fact that some woman brought her 7-ish year old to it was even better. 6/7/2006 11:52:09 PM |

Halloween is already killed. It's been beaten to death 3 movies ago.

if it is written and/or directed anything like his other movies it will rank somewhere in the top three worst movies of all time ever.
i wonder if he'll call it "Fuckoween Fuck Fuck!" ? 6/8/2006 3:16:07 AM |

i didn't like devils rejects, but I did recognize it as him trying to introduce something new. (whatever it may have been). And he's not stagnating and trying to push anything on us. He's still cutting his teeth and think this project is gonna give him the chance to do some pretty great things.
he has to take this opportunity though 6/8/2006 3:21:25 AM |

yea if the opportunity is to break the "fuck" record.
seriously both of his last flicks aimed to be high production value B movies, but wound up being a fractured urban legend, and... jesus "Devil's Rejects" was basically masturbation. 6/8/2006 3:25:38 AM |

Problem: prequel(not Zombie's fault probably) Problem: Zombie's movies have been lame, lame, lame Problem: Dr. Satan will get a reference in the Halloween movie Problem: Likely overdone gore-fest with zero actually scary moments Problem: The word "Fuck" where most people breathe, therefore taking all the power away from a great word. Problem: I care about this way too much(also probably not Rob's fault)

that's why i'm so optimistic actually. I think this is going to force him to do something other than a gore filled profanity contest. He's certainly always had the elements of Frightening in his films, but they just never jelled because he was working with stories that were more...disturbing than they were frightening. (like schindler's list being directed like it were Texas Chainsaw massacre)
Whatever. I really HOPE it's going to be his breakout movie, and maybe make up for devils rejects.
