It's the only major sport where a third of the team is on the verge of a heart attack at any given moment.

It takes almost four hours to play an hour-long game because the heart patients have to stop every five seconds.

I'd say it's my 5th favorite sport.. behind baseball, hockey, soccer, and basketball.

I love college football though.. but I'd rather watch a golf major or tennis grand slam final then your run of the mill (non-Jets) NFL reg. season game.

^Agreed.

Blasphemy.

Football is the greatest sport on the planet. Full-contact, live-action chess.

Heart, intellect, and physical ability are all three required more than any other sport.

Hate the networks, not the game.

Football is great overall, but it could be so much better. NFL has turned into a horrible product but people still love it.
Its hard to actually find the game. For every 4-5 plays, you get 10 minutes of commercials and another 10 minutes of other stuff including replays, which are brought to you by.....
And, keep that clock running. Don't let the game get in the way of advertising.
Not to mention too many teams, free agency, etc.
NFL is terrible, but football is great.

College football is a lot more "pure" for lack of a better word. I hate college OT but can live with it. I'd rather have ties in reg. season, and a tourney. The post-season is such a joke. Such a let down to a great season.
Biggest rule change should be to not stop the clock after every first down. Just do that inside 2 mins of each half. Games wouldn't have to take 4 hours.

People bitch about college players having to "play 2 extra games" if there was a tourney....but don't care that they have to play about 12 extra hours during the season. Thats about 4 games, if my math is right.

Why do people always say this? I don't hate football though it certainly isn't one of my favorite sports but I was without doubt athletic enough to play it despite my size.. I just was more into baseball and hockey..

^ I mostly agree with that , my ranking was just my general preference, but there is no sport quite as physical as rugby.

You can lock this thread if you want. I don't hate football. I do find it extremely boring on the whole, but that's just me. I'm just tired of people ranting about hating hockey and soccer because they don't know what to look at.

DDDAAWWWWW.

Like I said, I don't really hate football. You'd have to pay me to watch any team other than NC State, but I completely understand how it's become so popular.

1. They stop every five seconds. Plenty of time to get a beer and take a piss any time you want.
2. Stopping after every play allows immediate analysis, so Joe Sixpack has time to figure out (or have explained to him) what was going on from a strategic/technical perspective. The faster sports don't have these opportunities, so a casual fan who doesn't study the game can get lost in a hurry.
3. There are people of every shape and size playing pro football. There are no fat guys playing soccer other than Ailton.

Beardawg says that heart, physical ability, and intellect are required more in football than any other sport. I won't argue heart on general principle, no matter how true it might be. Physical ability all seems relative. Sure, offensive lineman spend 15 minutes of active time trying to block some uberstrong guys, but they're not running while they do it in most cases. The physical ability needed to block for 15 minutes is completely different from that needed to run for 90 or skate flat-out for 30, but I think it's silly to say one is more difficult than the other. I understand why they weigh linemen down with fat, but I think it's funny to argue for their value as physical specimens at that point. Skill players aren't any more well-built than elite athletes in other sports. As for intellect, I think it's less intense. Quarterback is undeniably one of the hardest positions in sports. Knowing all the plays, reading defenses, checking receivers, all while worrying about getting smashed is terribly difficult. Similarly, defenders have to be on top of things as to not be outsmarted by the wideouts. Still, at the end of each play, the thought process ends. The dynamic nature of the faster sports means that one can never stop thinking, and can't rely on the baseline of each offensive play or defensive scheme in dealing with the movement of play.

I find American football too slow for my needs. And I don't see why they call it full contact when they wear so much padding... I know people can get hurt pretty badly but still.
